1 gallon propane tank?

Trying to decide what propane tank to go with. I seen a 1 gallon tank and was wandering if anyone knew about how long that would last with a 6 gallon water heater? I will only be running the water heater off of it. I plan on using the trailer 2-4 days at a time. I also like the size that way I can install it in a tongue box up front with my battery. Before taking the plunge ask a propane dealer or two how much the charge to fill it will be. There are two dealers near me who have a 3.5 gallon minimum charge.

Ok I'll look into that. I also found a 2.5 gallon tank so I may do that.

Most of the U haul company stores will fill propane and they only charge for the gas sold (NO MINIMUM FILL CHARGES)

To your question one gallon of propane has the potential of 91,600 btu's Looks like most of the 6 and 10 gallon heaters need 12,000 btu's/hr so you are looking at 7.6 hours of run time. As it runs in cycles it is hard to say just how long it will maintain hot water. I am sure ambient temp and gallons used will be a large factor in actual run time. I didn't look but a tank less type heater may use less per hour.

I went with a 10# tank for my build. It holds about 2 gallons (propane is 4.24# per gallon), so that might be a good choice as well. For the price, the extra capacity might be a good idea for one more day in the woods. My mount uses a welding tank steel bracket to secure the bottle at the tongue box. Here's the one I bought.

I have two places near me where one charges by the gas required to fill the tank and the other a flat rate. You can guess which one I use.

For the water heater, keep in mind that the tank will not run all the time. I recall one poster, Bruce I think, that says the pilot really maintains a very good level of heat which would extend the usage time.

And as I plan on doing with my 6 gal. Suburban Heater, is to add even more insulation around it. Every little bit has to help.

A 10 gallon is over 40 pounds and looks like two 20# ers stacked on top of the other!

I have that 1 gallon tank. Its supposed to hold the same as 5 of the 1 lb cans. I find I have to refill it after 5 or 6 days of camping. I use it for my camp chef oven and lantern. I think its probably a bit small for the water heater.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into another tank. I found a 10lbs a while back tht was only 12" tall. I just need a tank that's under 15"

If I were doing it again I would be after a 10lb tank.

I have the small tanks and I loved it when I could use it. It was great for portable usage. But it is now over 12 years old and the propane stations will not fill it anymore per the law. So now the high price becomes a serious "con". I am looking into refilling it myself but I realize that can be a risky process and I am not sure if I want to take that on. But then if you take the $59 and divide it over 12 years, then the $5.00 per year for this convenience is not so bad. Everything seems to be a compromise these days.

That's not bad at all. I did find this 11lbs tank. The dimension are 12-11/29 x 12-3/8. I think I found my tank
