Nub from N Wisconsin

Hi all,

I have the teardrop bug and I am at step zero. Well, maybe not zero, but, real early in the process.

I have decided to do a 5x8 with 13" or bigger tires and am currently looking for a trailer. I've talked to a hobby builder/welder and he is possibly going to make me a ladder type frame with axle, wheels, tongue and coupler. I will take it from there. I am proposing to pay about $350 to $400 for the base trailer. Wish me luck!

Hi Tim IMO having a trailer built for your needs is both cost efficient and wise. If going 5 feet wide it important to have your roof spars on 4 foot centers so you will have purchase to screw your sheeting to. Five foot sheets of plywood are considered special order and more expensive. Al sheets are sold by the square foot and 5 foot widths are available commonly. The floor needs to be thinner than the roof by two times the wall thickness so dimension roof down for your cabin. You Can Do It.
Enjoy, Chris

Greetings Tim from Southern Wisconsin,
Sounds like you may have a good start. I built my own ladder type frame, that way It is exactly the way that I wanted it. I went with a 3500 lb axle so I could have larger bearings and a larger choice of tire / wheel combinations. I used lighter springs and for the hitch I went with a lunette eye to be used with a pintle hitch ( that is whats on all of my vehicles and it makes it a little more difficult for someone to steal ). My camper is 5' wide by 9' 5" long built with templates so things like sides would be identical. This made it easy to figure out cabinet design and placement since I did not have any plans.
Good Luck,
Paul in Janesville
