NT trailer stabilizing jacks

Postby TNSean » Thu May 07, 2015 2:59 pm

For those with a NT 5'x8' bolt together trailer, which stabilizing jacks are you using?

I want to bolt some on before flipping over the trailer, but can't decide which ones to get. The trailer is pretty tall, about 17" clearance from bottom of frame to ground with no load.

I am starting to think it is an odd size. The Atwood seem like one might be too short, and the other too long. The light duty BAL scissor jacks might also be too short. The longer one says 20" but I don't think that is the max reach but the length of the jack that moves down.

I am not sure what to do.

Here are the ones I was looking at.

Not sure why everyone uses stabilizer jacks. I just used a scissor jack from the junk yard center mounted and removable for travailing @ the rear more to keep trailer from tipping. Stabilizer jacks are not meant for leveling. I'm not worried about the trailer wiggling a little. It just means I'm still alive and having fun. :)

A couple of wood blocks, or flat rocks If available is what we always used under the jacks of our popups when I was a kid.

what I usually do is lower the tung then put jacks under the back left and right then bring the tung back up until the wheels are off the ground. then I can ad a jack in the front to and bring the front back down

this is what I will use on my new trailer.

I bought the ones you showed off of Amazon...Atwoods... they work great, "except" lol... they are a little bit short... so I have to put a 2x4 block under them... I did use the Valterra RV stabilizer http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UG ... UTF8&psc=1 which worked pretty good... I just got tired of pulling it out of the bag and setting it up each time...

and it is worth it...I didn't have any weight in the front... and too much weight in the back... and it tipped backwards and all the food fell out!! lol....

I'm planning on keeping a few small hunks of 3/4" plywood (off-cuts from the build) in the tongue box for the jacks, just in case. Figure the ground might be too soft at some point, or uneven enough that a pad or two may come in handy some day. A 6" x 6" piece of 3/4" plywood isn't too heavy and having a couple on hand may end up being a good thing, if it's rainy & I'm not at a camp site with paved spaces. The jacks I have don't have very much travel with the frame height I have & that's just with 13" tires & rims. If I ever decide to go to larger rims, they might need to be replaced.

I'll do the same thing for the front jack as well, in case it's soft dirt. Pull in, set the rear jacks to level across the back at the galley, then just turn the front crank until it's level. Most of the time it doesn't really matter, but if the AC's running, it needs to be level for drainage of the condensate.

In addition to plywood scraps, I keep a couple of 2x scraps in my tongue box for those really "un-level" sites.

For my build with the Northern Tool 8x5, I got these jacks. Work well so far, but the build is still in process, the trailer is not yet campable. The bolted right up to the frame (drill on hole per and mount on the rear most cross member) and have enough travel to keep her level (so far at least)

My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.
