Greetings from the great state of Utah

Postby webigrator » Tue May 19, 2015 11:36 pm

Hello folks,

You'll see my posts as webigrator (name/handle story for another time and place and not relevant here), but the name is Burk. I'll be a resident lurker on the forum for awhile as I plan and scheme to.... take over the world... errrm.... ummm... build a tear drop. :D Just looking through some of the Hall of Fame posts has been very enlightening. First, there might be 10 or 20 different ways (maybe more) to build a good teardrop as long as you pay attention to certain details. I'm looking forward to my own experience with more confidence. This is great as there don't seem to be many TD aficionados out this direction. I could be wrong, but if not then I know I'm not alone in this effort.

As indicated in the title of the post I'm out in Utah. Camp trailers out here are like weeds in your flower beds... they're everywhere. Big outdoor community. Just hardly any tear drops as they also like their campers big. :) Big guys and families, doing big camping, hunting, or fishing trips with some/all of the rest of the family... oft times with extended family too. Makes for good family bonding time. Did I mention that they're big? Anyway, not all families are of such temperaments, and mine certainly is not. My wife's idea of camping is the Homewood Suites or other similar establishment and my daughters take after their mother. That leaves me, and I really am wanting something more than a tent and certainly not something I could get lost in. Having the local boy scout troop green with envy as they get to sleep in tents on the ground would be a singular satisfactory experience. Besides, I don't want an extra truck payment just to pull a mobile house around as many are want to do.

After seeing some of the Hall of Fame builds, I have great hope about having some nice creature comforts AND enjoying getting to some nice fishing holes without undue muss or fuss. I'm especially interested in insulated options. :snow A saying out here is, "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes." It's so true, and while the Salt Lake City area is fairly moderate most of the time, sub-zero temperatures, even in early summer and fall are not uncommon, especially in the mountain ranges.

Anyway, enough about me for now. Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to getting to know more of you and being able to rely on such a passionate community of smart, intelligent, and experienced teardroppers on my path towards world dom.... ummm... my own teardrop journey. :icedtea:

I attended and graduated from Wasatch Academy in Mt Pleasant at 6,000 feet so I am familiar with the weather extremes. The SLC KOA was the only time we used our AC on a trip to California and yes I noted the size of trailers, (large).
Ours has 1.5" of foam insulation and three potential methods of providing heat, two for off grid an Espar diesel heater, an automotive heater core that ties in with the trailers water heater, and a marine type electric heater when we do have 120AC.

Welcome Burk
We towed our newly finished all over the State of Utah in July of 2012.......and just loved it.
Can understand why Utah is not the Teardrop Capital of the world, as the camping opportunities seemed to be endless????
As a matter of fact I just e-mail another Utah TD owner that said she was having a hard time finding other Tear drop events in your State.
Good Luck with your build.
Remember the build is at least half of the journey!

Webigrator,
Welcome to the group! I'm new here myself but the most interesting thing is that I also live in Utah and am looking for a teardrop trailer. That might be two of us in the entire state of Utah. Like you said, families and therefore, trailers, are BIG around here. Now that I think of it, I've never seen a teardrop in Utah.

Where in Utah do you live? I live in Salt Lake City.

Good luck with your teardrop adventures (and world dom...I mean...er...finding a trailer). I'm thinking that I might have to go west to find one.

Hello - Yes, that's my sister. She is getting serious about getting a TD! She just had a 7-pin installed on her Honda CRV! That means she's aiming to tow SOMETHING back there!

For those of you braving extreme Utah temperatures, your build/buy should also take into account where you plan to store your trailer. There's lots of advice about this on the forum so check it out and consider carefully! For example, I did a search for "storing teardrop outdoors" and "storing woodie outdoors" and there were multiple helpful threads.

If you are willing to drive a bit, you utahites should make the trip to Nevada this weekend for the twain & tears gathering! Meet some teardropers, look at some trailers, eat some good food. You can tent camp or stay at the great bed and breakfast, old pioneer garden.
