Maiden Voyage Success!!!

Postby MarcInBoise » Mon Jun 15, 2015 9:16 pm

Well, the Rum Locker (Yes, she finally got a name) had her maiden voyage. Went about 50 miles West to the Owyhee River in Oregon for some time away with the wife and trout fishing (not necessarily in that order).
I'm a lucky guy the wife puts up with me!

The trip was an outstanding success. She tows like a dream and everything worked.
Only complaint is that the full size memory foam mattress I bought from WalMart needs to be trimmed for length a bit. I like to sleep on my stomach with my toes off the end of the bed, and I couldn't get comfortable because the mattress is slightly longer than the cabin length, so it's wedged in there tight.
Should be a simple fix.

The Rum Locker. Good name! Great trailer.

I'm already starting to lose track of how many nights we've spent in ours this year.

Congrats Marc, Glad all went well for yall.
2 Questions since I've not built mine yet.
1 What length & width is your tear? I'm leaning towards a 5X10 for that same mattress problem...
2 What thickness is the Walmart mattress did you go with? I've seen 6'' & some people go with a 4" topper. Just wondering which one and how comfortable was it?
May yall have many more pleasant teardrop trips....

Bagged 4 Brown trout... all were 16+ inches. If you know the Owyhee, they are famous.
Catch & release only, which is fine with me!

My tear is 5x8. There is "just enough" room for me to lay straight in there without having to "angle". Were I to do it again (who knows) I'd definitely go for a 10' but that brings in a lot of other issues... all plywood comes in 4x8 and gets really expensive if/when you can find 10' lengths. Also, the aluminum I used on the sides came in 4x8 too, so that was why I went with an 8' build this time around. I didn't want to make it any harder than it already would have been.

The mattress thickness is 6", but I think it's closer to 4 or 5 when it comes out of it's compressed envelope from shipping. I had no issues with the mattress comfort, just room for the toes at the end of the bed. It's a little "firm" but I never felt like I was touching the floor of the trailer. I'd definitely go with this bed again.

I've always got my eyes peeled for tears. Your's is distinct. We drove up to Hamilton, MT last weekend and had four sightings. A regular hatch.

Congratulations on your maiden voyage. I just took mine this weekend and was all smiles. Isn't it great when you finish a project and it all goes well. Happy trails! Love the name too. :D 132994

Thank you sir, I almost went with that same blue instead of read, and wondered what it would look like.
Now I know... yours is very similar.

Congrats on your trailer, very nice!
