My Name is David Campbell.
I will be building a Jeep Towable Overland Exploring Grid Activating Self Contained Home Away From Home.

Jeep Tow-able - Able to be pulled by a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Limited (XJ) 5000 lb towing capacity, I want to be liter for river crossings / sand dunes. Want to match the size of the jeep as closely as possible for aerodynamic and trail width reasons.

Overland Exploring - Must have the same wheels and tires as the jeep. With spares interchangeable gives the Jeep 4 spares just in case. Will need a way to lash items to the trailer. Must not forget ground clearance, tracking, carrying capacity, comfort (there is something about a nice bed and a comfortable cooking arrangement.)

Grid Activating - This is for the hams. I want to be able to activate difficult rare Grid squares, To do this I must be self contained and make arrangements for safety. While over-landing I want to be able to setup a /P radio station operating it in any kind of weather. My Radio is an FT 817nd / LDG 817 tuner / using on-board battery charged by solar.

Self Contained - Able to get off grid for up to a week. My volunteer is a 1975 Sports Line popup. I am carefully removing parts during demolition and will post pictures and commentary as it continues. Known salvageable items include: Fresh Water Tank, ceiling vent Sink, 3-burner stove top, Electric / propane refrigerator, running lights and structural aluminum re purposed from the beds.

Welcome. First thing I would do is plan a solar system and battery backup. That way you are less reliant on genset for grid activation.

Hey all, I'm working on the dismantle and have some new pictures. After some of the things I discovered in the past week the sledge hammer is about to come out.

The current dimensions are 108" long X 88" wide, Frame is 12" ground clearance sides are 29" high,

Questions I Have:
What is a good R value for a 4-Season trailer, that will be used from 120 degrees F to possibly -30 degrees F? ( Paradox Colorado Yearly Temperature Variance)
Based on that scenario, what insulation thickness and type will be best for one or two people to be comfortable and survive?
Will poor mans fiberglass work as a decent outside cover, or should we use fiberglass or aluminum? What has the best insulation value?

Showing the construction of the popup. Aluminum skin, 7/8 wood (Looks Like Pine) 1/8 paneling.


Refrigerator inside and out. I have not located a label yet but will post all that information as the destruction happens.


Weird stuff - the 3 drawer dresser is mounted solidly to the frame. The vinyl on the floor is not under the dresser, and the wall is attached to the dresser. So this picture shows the gap from the floor to the top of the dresser. Think it is time to stop goofing around.


The Crank to raise and lower the top. Crank Works, cable is rusted a corroded in the chase. Probably what happens in rain and snow.


How the top is attached. A plate with 4 screws attaches to the top. a single bolt with a 7/16 nut is what attaches it to the roof.
