How Embarrassing

Postby BILLYL » Fri Jun 02, 2006 1:01 pm

Well I am in the last 10% of the project and am putting the finishing touches of installing the galley hatch. (Pics coming)

Anyway - framed it all up - covered it with 1/4 luan and attached the sheet metal. Installed the hinge and mounted it to the body. Looked kind of stange. Like - the hatch is way off. I rechecked the template that I used - fine and dandy.

Well - I showed the wife and she said - "Looks like the hatch is upside down" Like that fast. Like it is so obvious. I generally will put witness marks so I know what is up vs down (left vs right) I gues in my speed to rush to excellence I skipped that step and now I am paying for it.

O well - one step foward - two steps back.

I am so embarrased.

Well there are worse things you could do. At least you can turn it around.
Remember 180 not 90 degrees.

Its nice of you to share and keep your sense of humor.

Women are like that. They can be so picky and critical at times. But, will they build the hatch for you? Nooo.......

I hope you burst into tears when she told you.....

I build a boat once from a kit... a piece of wood was missing, so I cobbled one up from another piece, and glued/screwed it in place.. Then I found the missing piece lying on the floor in front of me.. sometimes I look but don't see. I try not to do that anymore.... but still do.

That is one reason to have another set of eyeballs look at your work. Sometimes you work on something so intently that you can't see the forest for the trees. When another person points out the obvious you think, "Duh, how did I miss that?"

Billy,

To err is human, to have your wife point it out is predictable.

I have one of those kind of dilemmas myself. I framed for a Fan-Tastic fan when I built my Tear. Finally got one, now the problem is, I can't remember exactly where I framed in for it. At least I know it's in the middle somewhere. I checked all the pictures I took, not one of that part of the framing.

Steve,

Just drill a 1/2" hole in the center of the area you think your framing is and drop a 1/4" flush cutiing router bit through the top and go for it! Heck, I wish my mistakes were that easy to work around! (Oh yeah, be sure the bit is in a router!!!!!)

Dare I suggest you ask your wife to borrow the Stud finder. Perhaps she will remember where she hid it.

I find that as we get older we have the missing parts of each others minds. Can be annoying and funny.

Seriously, there can be no serious response to this.

So I borrowed the stud finder from my wife, it didn't work through 1/4" plywood skin, even put new batteries in it, it's a cheapy. I liked Chris' idea, just drill a hole somewhere in the middle and start routing. In the middle of "IF I KNEW WHERE TO DRILL I WOULDN"T HAVE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT FORGETTING WHERE THE FRAME IS." :?

with quarter inch just tap around, you should find it. go front to back to find xmembers and sided to side to finally locate hole...

After my knuckles start to hurt, I usually switch to a small plastic screwdriver handle... tap gently, there will be a sound difference.

Thanks Arne,

Turns out I ran the wire for the fan and put light where the fan was to go, that made it pretty easy, used the laminate trimmer, it smoked that pink foam insulation. Then I ran into the wires where they came through the frame, blew the fuse for the cabin lights. Got the inside and outside skin all trimmed up and found I had stuffed extra wire in there just so I'd have spare wire when I ran into it with the laminate trimmer....planned ahead and forgot about it, guess I know me pretty well......

And Sorry Billy, I didn't mean to hijack your thread, after all you should be embarrassed
