Inspiration

Postby booyah » Tue Jun 16, 2015 3:38 pm

Feeling pretty down on the teardrop build right now. Done a ton of work on my tear, but right now the "this is never going to finish" blues are setting in....

What did/do you do to get past this?

I know I've done a lot of work, and compared to when I started I'm getting close, but I'm having trouble getting as motivated as I was a few months back, or even last week....
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Something that helps me when I get in that spot is to clean up the garage/ shop.
Put tools away, sweep, arrange materials, etc.

Once I'm done with that, I'm ready to get going on the project again.

Might be worth trying.

Next time it rains, go camping. Take your tent. Stop by Walmart and pick up $3.99 sleeping pad. 8)

Happened to me especially nearing completion. Seemed like no matter what I did there was so much to do. I agree clean the shop and start all over making a new mess. It will get done. Sometimes a day or two away from the build helps too. Of course a few hydraulic sandwiches and cruising the build forums is always a great motivator. :)

Register for a gathering in the future. Having a dead line will also help. Also, break down whats left into smaller projects. You will get a feeling of accomplishment as these smaller tasks get done. Remember, they are never really done. Get it sealed and water proof and try it out. Then build the cabinets and galley storage .

Get ahold of & watch a copy of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" or "Kelly's Heroes". Both are pretty inspirational, funny too.

Thanks folks, I cleaned up the shop last night, and got a bunch more done.

Just trying to get past the funk, so I can actually use her.

Steve smacked it on the head. Do what is needed to get out in it and have a good time camping. Two of mine were built in 07 and 08 and still not done but have been on 30-40 gatherings. Find your local tearjerker chapter and get with them to trade ideas you just might find some answers to problems that may have you blocked. Heck you are close enough to join us at the Crossroads of America national gathering easily. Just get it road worthy and tow it on down. There are few other places you will see 150 +/- tiny trailers in one spot.

Crossroads of america is not a bad idea. Dont know if I can get her on the road by then, but thats a pretty solid goal.

Thx bobhenry

Steve and Bob have it in spades. My original "timeline" was to probably have mine finished by Sept. But, with grandson's HS graduation at the end of June I thought it might be possible to get it done by the end of May. As May got closer the early date seemed probable. However, I was doing things that did not need doing and putting off things that absolutely needed doing. So I made 3 lists. The "absolute to get it on the road", the "it should have this to work well", and the "I wish I could have done this". I've completed the first and pretty much all of the second list. Third, maybe 60%. What I'm getting at is we made the decision that Conch Fritter was going on the road as long as she was 1) safe, 2) comfortable, 3) reliable. She is all of those at this point. I've now slept in her the last two nights and we intend to take her out in two days for a 2,600 mile trip.

So, make the list, figure out what you absolutely need to have to get it campable and safe. Once camping I'm sure you'll be like me and figure out the next things that need to be done or should be done.

The electric sites are all booked but Don't let that stop ya!
You can come hang out with us till the weee hours and then retire to one of the primitive site (many still available) for sleepy time.
Keep any eye on the Midwest CRA thread as Kurt will announce any last minute cancelations and you can jump in.

booyah, I know the feeling!...Don't know if you like country music , but Johnny Cash recorded a song "One piece at time" about building a new car from parts he appropiated from the auto factory he worked at, sure helped me get back to the project.......Point is the last 10% seems to take the longest..... Txbum, booyah , your build is looking GOOD !

Thx everyone for the inspiration.

The hard part for me, is that the entire build proces has been focused on "Lets just get it campable and on the road" already :-) No galley cabinets are in the immediate plan, I am going to do a basic countertop (probably jsut plain plywood for now) mostly to help keep the galley square...

Function over form is my motto, I think the thing that got me bummed, was that I was just about ready to skin the outside, but hadnt touched the hatch/galley section at all... Combined with some apprehension about building the hatch to begin with, it just got me down.

Now I'm ready to skin the outside, and am working on the galley, so hopefully Monday I will have some good updated pics and will feel back on track.

Sometimes just putting things away and taking a break. Make a list and have a goal of just one thing to get done on the list.
