Along the same lines, I've thought about getting camper for when my son and I (and maybe my wife and daughter, if I can convince them) go camping. My limitations are practical -- I don't have a truck to tow with, or a lot of money to throw around, and I don't have very much space at all on my tiny piece of Los Angeles real estate to store anything. So building a little teardrop is an idea that's been nagging at me recently.
In addition to trying to learn as much as I can here, I've ordered a hitch for the family sedan and am making plans to rent a teardrop once or twice to see if the size will be too much of an obstacle before I go and start building one of these things and finding a place to put it.
The image that keeps sticking in my head is only real because of Photoshop, right now. But I'd like to ultimately be able to also use the trailer with my race car, so that as the kids get older and I'm able to start club racing again, I can bring my lodging with me to the California and Nevada tracks I drive at.

I did the garage for $3,500, including the lift. I learned to weld, pour concrete, set tile and do some basic carpentry and metal fabrication along the way. My wild guess is that I could come pretty close to that dollar figure for a teardrop -- but it's just a guess from a complete neophyte. I hope to soak up as much as I can from the posts in this forum and (hopefully) get it right in one try.
