How to keep clothes hangers from falling in rough going

Postby AZKayaker » Thu Jun 25, 2015 11:06 pm

I've tried plastic hangers, wire hangers and wire hangers bent over the rod, but my clothes still end up at the bottom of my closet in rough going. :x Any tricks to keeping them on the hangers and the hangers on the rod?

Just a thought.I have not tried this.
How about a rubber band slipped over the top. After you hang the hanger up you take the rubber band and put it over the end of the hook

By looping a rubber band around the hanger and then bending a small up turn in the hook you can stretch the band under the bar and hook it to the nose of the hanger loop.

Here is one with a convenient round loop and an up turned hook incorporated into the hanger all you need is the rubber band

They also make a hanger with an enlarged ball on the hanging end in lieu of the hook this pea sized ball is inserted into a round hole in the bar and a slit is made the full length of the bar so multiples can be inserted and removed as needed. I imagine a small piece of tape over the entry hole would keep the hangers from migrating to the hole and dropping out.

I don't know about keeping the hangers on the rod, but if you get the hangers that feel like felt, the clothes stay on them great. They also take up less space than the plastic hangers. Ask me how I know.... :D

Try a length of PVC pipe with a section cut out. A little trial and error will tell you the right size and how much to cut out. One piece does a whole closet. Another option works if you have a solid shelf above the closet rod: Take a piece of one inch lumber wide enough to just contact the rod with hangers on it and attach it with hinges above the rod. Once again trial and error will provide the right size. Make sure you put the hinges to the front side of the rod or you will have to raise it every time you take off a hanger. Might need a zip tie to hold it in place if the going is really rough. I think there is also a manufactured device to accomplish this. Ask at an RV store.

you could use a bungie running from one end to the other. But the simplest would be to put a pc of wood on top and use one of those clamps you used to build it with and clamp it to the closet bar with the hanger between.

you could tie a rope or bungie around the clothing so they hag as a joint weight.
And my last idea is a board with padding on the bottom, hinged at one end have it swing down to a catch at the other end of the closet The padding on the bottom of the wood strip would pad the hangers keeping them from moving.

I am thinking of putting a closet in my new build and had not thought about that. But most people fold or roll their clothing.

So are the hangers not staying on the rod, or are your clothes falling off the hangers?

nansplace is right. Those super thin hangers with the velvet texture will keep clothes on the hanger.

I've found by wrapping and fastening a strip of velcro around all of the hangers (right at the base of the silver hook above where it attaches to the wood) while the trailer is in transit keeps them all on the rod. If I forget to bind them together most or all of them will pop off and be all over the mattress when I stop and open the door. But mine is very thin (it's a drawer pull) so not sure if it'll work on a standard sized closet rod.
