Hello from Key Largo

Postby qpie » Sun Jun 21, 2015 8:17 am

I saw my first teardrop online while researching my daughter's and my recent road trip. I toyed with buying one for our trip, but as all of you already know, they aren't cheap! I am hoping to retire in the next couple of years and I am trying not to lose focus. My attraction to TDs is their simplicity, so it doesn't make sense to me to take on a payment to buy a new one. Finding this site I see now there are many options. I love how accepting TD owners seem to be of all of them. No more debt for me, so in the end my daughter and I threw a tent, cooler and a few other things in my 8 year old Prius and hit the road for a month. 9,863 of the happiest miles I've ever driven. I can't wait to do it again, hopefully in a teardrop!

Was on my way down there last January when 850 mile from MN and got a call to come home. (father in law past) Hope to do a trip your way in a year or two.
I did road trips with my 3 kids 2500 mile in a minivan no tent just slept in the van. Which I had my teardrop back then. Start building (even a simple one with a galley) you would regret it.

When you finally make it down here make sure you drive all the way to Key West. The northernmost Keys are forgetable. You need to drive to Islamorada before it gets pretty. I don't care much for Key West, but the drive down US 1 over all the bridges with the Florida Bay on one side and the Atlantic on the other is beautiful. In the summer, when there isn't even a breath of wind, the water becomes mirror-like and the tiny mangrove islands look like they are floating in the sky. It is hard to tell where the horizon is, the sky and water seem to be one in the same. BUT the temperature is more comfortable in the winter. Summers are just brutally hot.

I have a lot of reading to do. Weight will be a big consideration since I will be pulling it with a small car, and it sounds like foam is the material of choice!
Thanks for the welcome. Will be researching.
