Where to order "stuff"

Postby mjewell5 » Thu Jul 02, 2015 1:58 pm

Hello all:

I am a new member, and am thinking about building my own TD. I have good wood skills, so I'm not afraid of doing this. I have quite a bit of experience in aircraft structure and am contemplating some aviation-type construction to really reduce weight. My one big question is where to buy parts. Things like doors, vents, edge extrusions, hinges, etc. etc. Prefer online buying, but if there is a good supply house in the Kansas City area I would be interested in that as well.

Any help and guidance is sincerely appreciated!

Normally I'd recommend Grant Whipp but they on their honeymoon.
He does have suppliers listed in the above link that might be of help.

I used vintage technologies out of Michigan for my doors, aluminum trim, hatch hinge, lights, shore power outlet & 12 volt outlets. I used metals depot in Kentucky for the aluminum diamond plate material on the front. I got the fantastic fan on Amazon. It was cheaper than vintage tech. Northern tool locally for trailer hub sets, tongue jack, wheels and tires, coupler and trailer lights. Wood from 84 lumber since their wood was better quality than Lowe's or Home Depot. Wiring, circuit breakers, 110 volt outlets, breaker box and misc screws and glue from Lowe's. Too much information?

 :applause: http://teardropbuilder.com/ which I just discovered has a very well illustrated and documented build journal.
His list of suppliers, which he calls Components and Parts Resources is very helpful.
He used a Northern Tool 5' x 8' trailer for his teardrop.

I'd add:
raka.com for epoxy and fiberglass supplies.
delcity.net is excellent for wiring and electrical supplies.
etrailer.com has a wealth of useful parts like trailer wheels and tires, led lights and trailer jacks.
rvvent.com is the best place to buy a Fantastic Vent (Fan). Their prices are very competitive and they customize the vents which no other supplier I know of can or will do.
recstuff.com/Trailer-Fenders has a very good selection of aluminum fenders. They also have a big selection of aluminum wheels.
trailerpart.com/torsionaxles sells flexiride axles and many other trailer parts.
boltdepot.com sells just about every bolt, nut, washer or screw you will need at very good prices.

No one mentioned Amazon.com? They've got everything, it seems.
Ebay is another good source a lot of folks use.
Esteban mentioned delcity.com for electrical. I also like Waytek for things electrical. Both are good, with fast service and full product lines.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

For wood go to a cabinet supply type of lumber yard. I'm sure there's one near you. Find one that supplies the cabinet shops in your area with Baltic Birch plywood, hardwood plywood & 4/4 hardwood lumber. Don't go the Home Delay route, prices are too high & quality is too low.

For hardwoods and plywoods you have " Liberty Hardwoods" in K.C.
