Hello from Michigan

Postby redwing1967 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 6:56 pm

Just wanted to say a quick hello to everyone with a quick intro. My name's Frank and I live in Howell, MI (just north of Ann Arbor) with my beautiful wife and teen step-daughter. My passion is riding ( I own a 2015 Harley Ultra) whenever and whereever I can (yes, even in the rain). Trying to get the wife to ride with me more. Her riding more = Me riding more.

I've been lurking on the board for a couple of weeks now. Eventually I'd like to build a tear to pull behind the bike. I probably won't be able to start my project for a couple of years. Right now I'm just gathering info and getting ideas for the design and size. I have a lot of friends who pull the pop-up tents with no problems at all and most of them are around the 300-400lb range. I in fact am trying to sell an older Combi Camp (wife doesn't like the "moldy" smell of the pop-up) which has the clam shell design.

I don't think my bike would have any trouble with a tear that goes up to, say, 500lbs. My biggest concern is with side winds on a tear compared to a pop-up. My other concern is what type of axle to go with. Will the standard 40 x 48 HF or NT axle be okay behind a bike or should I plan on upgrading to a torsion axle? Anyone with a motorcycle have some insight for me?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to conversing and kicking around ideas with you all.

Welcome Frank, you are at the right place for ideas that's for sure. I've seen a few around now and then a quick search came up with this page which list a few manufacturers for some ideas to incorporate into your build. Some are quite pricey but some good ideas to build off of for the do it yourselfer.

Good luck!
