(what to do with 61 Broken Arrow TeePee)

Postby Ironhinge » Tue Jul 14, 2015 7:22 pm

So, I have acquired a vintage aluminium camper in bad shape... It had been used for storage for many years, the vent leaked and the floor rotted out... there are quite a few usable parts and intact wood however... I am looking for advice on how much I should try and salvage and reuse. I love the romance of the old trailer and like the Idea of restoring it but I am also feeling that not trying to save each and every piece of the panelling will help keep this project light and fun...

I'd just like to hear if there are any opinions, all of them if there are

As an individual who like to preserve, I would say, probably not worth it.

If the windows, doors and aluminum skins are in re-usable condition, you could do a frame up re-build. There’s no value in trying to keep most old campers original unless you have something like an Airfloat or a Westcraft. You could re-do it to your budget and style. Strip it down (keep everything for later) lay out the aluminum skins on some paneling, trace out the skins and start building. You can change the shape of the exterior slightly, but you need to keep the windows and door in the original position if you’re re-using the old aluminum. Here are pictures from two different camper projects to give you an idea.

It's a bit of work, but it's worth it.

Thanks for the replys, that is what I secretly wanted to hear. I am now free to plan on doing something very similar the photos that were linked for me. I have already pulled all the walls down, the aluminium is sitting ready to be cleaned up, the walls are in the shop. The old ply is cut veneer not rolled and is nice, at least the parts of it that are nice. In the meantime however I have just bought a trillium 4500 that Is much closer to camping shape... The thing that makes the TeePee exciting if it can't be vintage and original is making it functional for me and how I would like to use it. lets see how I would put the TeePee together after a few camping trips in the Trillium
