Unusual Teardrop?

Postby Lobo » Sun Jun 04, 2006 7:43 am

Hey Guys,

If you go to Tales & Trails

http://www.teardrops.net/plans01.html

and scroll down the page to the tenth teardrop you'll find The Chummy. This camper appeals to me in both design and construction, so I emailed the builder. Unfortunately, I've gotten no response over a period of time.

Does anyone know anything about this camper or have info about something similar?

That's Dean Tennis's Chummy. It was destroyed in an accident a couple of years ago. Be;ow are pics of Chummy II. There are plans out there on CD. Like Kerry say's, send him a letter via 'snail-mail'. Meanwhile I'll look further into it also.

I don't believe he was fourwheeling, you can see the highway in the background, the SUV pushed him that far off the highway. If I remember the story correctly, the rescue crew didn't know there was a trailer behind the model A until he asked them how it was.

He was on the hwy just cruising along minding his own business when this truck came along and........
Dean is still in the car with that pic. The first thing he asked when they got him out was "How was the Teardrop?" They answered with "What teardrop?"

Have a good day.

That thing is gorgeous, but judging by one of the photos, it doesn't look insulated at all.

Just side walls with framing, and no interior skins.

But what's the deal with that cool roof on Chummy I!? Is that canvas?

I'm also paying particular attention to that door trimming, because the door shape and window is so similar to mine. It doesn't look like he used any of the conventional materials, so like, how is it waterproof?
Here we go again!

Gage, there was a kind of fundraising drive at one time to help Dean (his insurance didn't cover any of the costs on his woody or the tear) with funding a replacement tear. I think that was right around the time I discovered this place.

Dean's tear was lovely. It looks like the new Chummy II has a hard top. I believe the original was a canvas top. I know there were plans available on CD -- the CDs were sold on a different board, one I believe no longer exists, and the proceeds were supposed to go to Dean.

The pickup on top of his car - - - was "drag racing" another pickup when the wreck happened.

Yep your right Laredo. And if I remember correctly, the roof on the Chummy was stratched hide. Come to think about it. It could be stratched canvas. The Chummy II has the same roof. The main difference between the two is he brought the sides up over the doors on the II.

My understanding is that it does still exist, but is membership by invitation only - so welcome to the club of the un-invited!

Gage may respond on this as I thought he suggested one time that he was a member of the phantom board.

Andrew, I think at one time you did some work on the aero design of a tear. Any idea about how a square-back tear would work?

In one of the pics above, or at the link, there is a pic of a square back tear.. it looks so simple... a couple of doors flop open and you have your work spaces and counter space.... but how might it affect the aerodynamics while driving, ie, much extra drag?
