Canvas/tb2 then bed liner

Postby birddog24 » Wed Jul 15, 2015 5:00 pm

Has anyone had any experience using poor man's fiberglass to waterproof and strengthen the wood. Then choosing with a bedliner material? Can you see the texture through the bedliner?

Rhino liner or similar is pretty thick stuff, I doubt you'd see canvas texture through it

I just looked into covering with Armorthane but the cost is astronomical $2800 for red and silver would be close to $3000 (Canadian).

I guess my only concern would be the bedliner not sticking to the glue/canvas very well...... I think a phone call to some of these manufacture's is in my near future

Not bed liner but rather paint.... Below is some information that may help you.

I believe two places canvas was historically used in boat-building (excluding sails!) are:
1) As a waterproofer for decks and cabin tops when set in paint (usually old left-over paint) over planking. I believe this is because the 'conventional' technique of caulking a planking seam works on a hull that is always immersed but not on a deck or cabin top that wets and dries out.
2) As a glued (and painted) layer between the skins on double diagonal planked hulls. Again the canvas was a waterproofing layer.

So it's not a new idea -though using it on foam is.

The black part of this teardrop was created using the boat method. This teardrop has been around a few years and is doing just fine:

I saw one at the Lamay Car Show about 10-12 or so years ago. It looked great. I'm not in touch with the owner so I can't help you further. Maybe someone else knows where it is.
