Happier Camper

Postby Andrew Cush » Mon Jul 20, 2015 11:36 pm

Hi all,

I am new to the forum. I recently stumbled across an interesting tiny trailer design. Check it out at www.happiercamper.com and let me know your thoughts? Not sure if their flagship HC1 has launched yet. I like the retro look and the flexible design is interesting. It might leave something to be desired in the way of the galley.

That's really cute! :applause:

The website says it's coming soon. I'll be interested in seeing the specifications and price.

That has a very nice, clean minimalist design. But at the same time has some pretty cool features. Now, we'll see if they charge an arm and a leg for it.

If you follow the link to purchase, it says the base model starts at $15,950. I wonder if I will be able to see one at the RV show next January. Very interesting concept with plenty of ideas for the home builders to borrow. It also looks like the base model starts at 1100 lbs. If the quality is there, I could see these becoming very popular.

I'm pleased to see it.

It may be my imagination, but I can't go anywhere in central Idaho or Western Montana this summer without seeing numerous 5th-wheel campers 32' to 40' in length. It's like a hatch of giant six-ton beasts. They can't be that fun to drag down the highway.

I think that is a very cool little trailer and I hope they can keep the business going. I like the retro design and the modular interior and hope that this is another entrant in a resurgence of small and affordable weekend campers - an alternative to tent trailers that has not been readily available.

Regarding the oversize trailer item, to be honest, the size of some fifth wheels and RVs is now just out of hand in my opinion. I don't care what private campgrounds do in terms of reaching those customers, but on public land my personal opinion is that we should not be obligated to create campgrounds and all the associated infrastructure to accommodate people that want to drag buildings around with them when they "camp". My bias, my opinion, but I think on public lands there should be some pushback on the size of these vehicles, because they have an effect on road damage, traffic congestion, and the quality of the experience in campgrounds, where they run generators and block views with 15' of freeboard. I do get that for retirees that live full time the comfort of a larger vehicle is attractive.

Perhaps one of my beefs is that when I take my trailer to public lands campgrounds, and there are tent loops and trailer loops, I end up with gigantic RVs, while my trailer is not larger than some family tents. Sometimes I find campgrounds that for practical reasons can't fit the mega-boxes, and the mix of tents, modest travel trailers, tent trailers, and now and again the humble teardrop is very pleasant.

Thanks for the rant-portunity.

This weekend up in Flagstaff there was the usual selection of 5th wheels, motor palaces & pop-tops. There are about 50 spaces at Pine Grove campground, I guess, with as many different types of people. It's funny, but the one camper people went out of their way to look at was Keith's teardrop. With the big $$ rigs all around, it was the little teardrop that stirred the most interest and gave the most smiles. There were groups of people lining up to take the tour. Goes to show, there's still a lot of interest in a small camper which is functional & comfortable.

Tastes differ, people have different means, but it seems the real interest still lies in something hand-crafted. If someone's idea of fun is to tow around 15,000# of factory-made camper with the 800 horse power needed to do it, I say have at it! For me, I'll just be happy to finally finish my build & hit the road for a few trips.

Nice to see a small build which is functional & nicely done. I wish the new guys well & lots of success on their endeavor. Hope it catches on and they sell a bunch of them!
