What happened to me?

Postby Retroguy » Thu Jul 23, 2015 6:52 am

It's hitting me hard this time. I'm looking at hundreds of oictures of tear drops, dreaming about which one I want to build. Lkfe was so simple a few weeks ago. Now I'm ignoring work, family, I'm not eating or sleeping. Okay maybe I'm over exaggerating but I'm really hooked. I'm new so I'm going to ask a bunch of questions, just a warning in advance. It's so hard to prioritize what is most important when building a tear drop when designing. I'm a little embarrased to say that for me, the looks of it comes first. I consider them pieces of functional art. I like the looks of this Scotty. Although this was probably manufactured and probably very difficult to duplicate.

yes you have it bad but you can cure it with time and there isn't anything that can't be duplicated with skills and we all have skills

I love the Scotty teardrops too but there are lot of designs and the real fun part is taking all the things you love in all the different models and creating your own design! I was hooked hard. I just wanted to camp easy, all the camping I had ever seen in the past was so much work and my first idea was to build a truck camper and a friend turned me on to teardrops and when I discovered this forum, I think I didn't leave the house for a month! LOL.. Within two months I had started my build... I loved the wing style profile of the Cub/Modernistic/Modernaire teardrops and modeled my profile after that. Here is my "LT" (Luxury Tent). I sold it to a member of this forum to get the down payment for my land and now I camp in a standy Scotty :D I would love to build another teardrop sometime and would probably to the 6 wide Kampster/Wild Goose style.

Dang you 2bits. I'm trying to narrow this down and you show me that beautiful thing. Very cool! What's the sides and top made of. How did you get the look of those sought of Art Deco stripes on the side? Brian and Sandi are lucky folks to get it.

Retroguy, we don't own it! It belongs to a good friend of ours Marrianne, who you can see in the Farm Video (she has personalized it).
Very nice trailer......and she uses it a lot! Our third time camping with her just this year.

RETOGUY
probably manufactured and probably very difficult to duplicate.

I like the 58 Scotty .I am planing to build something like this . The flat hatch in the back seams easy to build . I plan to use r24 for the front and when it gets to the back. Will use a R48 To go from the top to back I need to figure how to do the bottom' . With the radii I am use the plywood will bend easy .
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN,
YET AT THE SAME TIME, THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE,,, SO MAKE THE BEST OF IT WHILE YOU CAN, AND ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS

Well, while I don't own it any longer, and Brian and Sandi just are lucky enough to know the awesome new owner, I did build it so I can answer a few questions and the answers might surprise you!!

The sides are 4x10 Maple 3/4' plywood. You can get 4x10 sheets at "Real" plywood companies and I didn't want to do a joiner from a 4x8. It was easily worth the price at just over double the big box price. ($125/sheet)
The roof is just some factory painted aluminum sheets.
The art deco wood stripes and edge trim was painstakingly embedded into the sides using a complex method of using (drum roll here...) Wood grain adhesive kitchen cabinet shelf liner! Many purists would scoff at this and I honestly only did it as a temporary way to make the teardrop presentable for the upcoming season and it stuck so well and looked so good, I figured if it ain't broke....

Us teardroppers are mighty creative! Now it's your turn! By the way people love when you steal their ideas, I stole many many things that contributed to my build. It takes a village eh!!

You officially have the disease. Unfortunately it doesn't go away after your first build. You want to build another. I've got 3-4 more builds I'm working through mentally. I'd have already started on a couple if life hadn't thrown me some curveballs. I'm in the camp of having a little wow factor in your build but I would say it's a tie with comfort with utility being a close second.

I understand your enthusiasm! I am halfway thru my first build and already planning my second.
You can have that look. Check out my modern version of that same Scotty Serro under, Build Journals/ Let the Games Begin.
It might give you some ideas!

Hello everybody. I'm Brad and I have a teardrop problem. (all together: "Hi, Brad.")

You have the same thing we all have. You're in recovery now. You won't ever be cured, but when you follow the 12 step program (Admit your problem, seek help from others, surrender to a higher power, chassis, floor, walls, galley, etc.), you will come to accept it.

I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

:D Looking forward to it, but to many options. For some reason I'm focusing a lot on the skin. For the Scotty. I'm not sure what skin options I have for the Scotty inspired scooter.
