Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Internet Service Provider

Postby s4son » Sun Jun 04, 2006 9:48 pm

This is really off topic but I value the advice I get from you folks here. I need an ISP for a couple web sites. I administer one for a club I belong to and the ISP we were using went belly up. I also want to start my own personal web site. This is the second ISP I have had this happen with. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Scott, you might look into.http://www.westhost.com/.I've been with them a few years and only one time was there any problems. That was just a couple of months ago. For one week, we never knew if we were going to be up or down. They gave me a free month without me even asking. They do maintenance early in the morning and they let you know that it is going to happen.

Have a good day.

Scott, be your own ISP..if you have cable internet in your town, well, you got a high speed connection right there, all you need is Apache server installed on your computer, find your IP number, buy a domain name for 8 bucks, hook the domain to your IP number, and your a ISP.

Scott--although I'm not a big web guru, I reserved a domain and hosted a "site" that I never really set up with Yahoo.

And I have to tell you--they were fantastic.

Not only do they have huge, redundant sites in the event of a failure at one, but the way their whole service is organized is just fantastic and totally AUTOMATED.

Every detail is so cleanly spelled out with them, including billing and such. And we're talking about a company with HUNDREDS of service reps to help you out when you need it.
Here we go again!

I considered doing that myself for some sites I run until I checked my ISP's contract info. You might want to look into yours. I found out that I could do just that but if I got caught it would cost me dearly. The minimum monthly cost to run a server of any kind, even private on mine is $250 a month.
Just what I found out about mine. Keep in mind, theft of service can be a felony.

A couple of months ago I moved to www.godaddy.com and haven't had any problems so far.

I've been very happy with webquarry.com
I've been using them for 5 sites (plus my own) for about 18 months now.
