Newbie question about wheels

Postby Retroguy » Sun Jul 26, 2015 6:57 am

I plan on building a tear on a Harbour Freight trailer or like it. Will I be able to switch out and find wheels that fit that have a vintage feel?
Below shows shows the generic trailer wheels. I prefer to have something like the look of the wheel on the tear drop trailer shown. Any recommendations on trailers that will accommodate that?

Us wheel makes a wheel that looks a lot like the wheel on the trailer on top. I don't know if they make a 4 lug. her is a link.http://www.uswheel.com/products/chrmsmoothie You may be able to use an adapter to go from 4 lug to 5 lug.

By all means go 15" wheels!
Wheels Vintques makes great wheels too!
But you should think about a home built Chassis with a Dexter Torsion axle????
You will be way happier down the road.

I get my wheels from Summit Racing. I went through them for the artillery wheels for the Benroy Woody. They are made by US Wheel.

If you have the lug stud measurements you can look on Summit's web page to see if they have one that will fit.

You need to investigate wheel offset and width too - HF trailers don't seem to have a lot of clearance between the inner sidewall of the tire and the frame rails, so if you fit a wider wheel or one with offset, it may foul the frame rails. On the other hand if you get a wheel with positive offset so that it clears the frame rails, it will overhang the wheel bearings - no great problem if your trailer weighs a lot less than the hubs can carry.

A couple of side notes. I see your HF trailer has a 5 lug wheel. I didn't notice that earlier. If you want white walls like in the picture, JC whitney has wide whites for vw beetles. Or if you use a trailer tire, you could look at portawalls.

Just to clarify, those are just stock pictures off the internet, I have not bought a trailer yet. I feel I need to get all my thoughts together first before I start. I want to make sure I pick the right trailer first. Can I add 15 inch wheels to a 5 lug trailer. I'm am not knowledgeable about trailer wheel anatomy

For more clarification, lug patterns are different for different hubs and different wheels. Here's a page with a lot of info on it:

http://www.crawlpedia.com/bolt_patterns.htm

The short version is that you can't mix and match wheels and hubs, even when it's the same number of lugs. You have to learn the pattern of your hub and shop for wheels accordingly.

Offset (the distance from the vertical centerline of the wheel to the vertical line of the mating surface of the wheel center) is another issue with cars, but most trailer wheels are zero offset.
