Coffee Pot for camping

Hello all,

At the TearStock gathering this last week, I saw a 12 volt coffee pot for sale, $39.95. It made 16 ounces of coffee from your DC outlet. My question is, what are most of ya'll using? I usually take a tablespoon of instant coffee, a package of sugar, a teaspoon of creamer and put it all in a small medicine zip lock. Then, in the mornings, I heat water with my backpacking stove, put the contents in a cup and add hot water. But, it would be nice to have fresh, real coffee when I wanted it.
So, any one have comments or suggestions? I suppose I could use a regular Mr Coffee when plugged in, but not always near AC so the DC thing would be pretty cool.

We plunk a pot of water on the burner, dump a couple of spoon fulls of nearly-fresh ground coffee in our two Bodum insulated coffee presses, and pour the boiling water over it. Doesn't get any better than that.

We do the fresh ground in a press as well. AC kettle if AC is available. Propane / Colman stove if no AC. DC is my last resort for heating anythig unless a vehicle is running.

Kudzu and I are on the same page. We've been using our Moka for years, both at home and on the road. It makes the perfect cup of coffee. It cooks up kind of an espresso, but then you dilute to the level you like. It is small, light weight and works really fast.

We usually have electric. So it'll be a toss up between the 4 cup Mr. Coffee or the Keurig. What can I say, I need coffee in the morning before the fire or the stove is going!

Starbucks has some good instant now. Boil some water on the stove and mix it up.

Whistling tea kettle of water on the stove and an Aerobie Aero Press. Hand bean grinder in case I forget to grind at the store. No grounds in the mug, just really good coffee.

Same thing as the cap'n, right down to the same grinder. Love good, fresh coffee when camping.

Same here, but if I have shore power I use a Rival electric tea kettle to heat the water.

A couple of years ago I did some extensive testing on using 12 volts to run a coffee maker. My setup was a little different in that I used a 12 volt inverter to run a standard coffee maker so there was a 10% loss of efficiency just from the inverter. It drew > 50 amps for the 10 minutes it took to make a full pot (12 cups). Then if it was left on to maintain the coffee temp it would intermittently draw large currents of power. My personal conclusion is that this is not a good way to use your 12 volt power if it is from a SINGLE battery system which mine was/is. IMHO 12 volt coffee makers are ok for multiple battery setups....like in a tractor trailer rig or a home solar system battery, but it is just too much for a single battery. Others may have had a better experience using 12 volts for an electric coffee maker.

HI All. I have used the instant coffee etc for years. What I use now is a Coleman coffee maker. Identical to my electric coffee maker at home, without the cord. perks fresh coffee over your propane stove/burner in minutes. LOVE IT!

We use an aeropress.....small, no electricity needed, makes a darned fine cup as well, Think single serving French press....

Oh, and it's easy to clean!
