Feedback on my idea for a lowcost trailer build

Postby Dan242 » Tue Aug 04, 2015 12:39 am

I'm gonna start a build thread, turning this into an introductory thread
We live in San Antonio Tx, have access to 5-6 State parks within a few hours drive, like to go camping for a few days up to a week at a time. less civilized the better
We are getting a little tired of dragging everything out to the station wagon, loading up, setting up camp, sleeping in the tent on air mattresses that leak or I forget the valve or something

Decided to build a tiny trailer on an old boat trailer I had, then ran across a HF add for their 4x8 trailer for 259. gave me new tires, more width, seemed easy enough
I bought the HF 4 x 8 trailer, flipped the axle with stronger ubolts. to lower it. My tow car is lowered already

I was able to extend and strengthen my tongue with an old boat tongue, It's 2 x 3 box with a welded receiver on the end flipped the stock receiver mount over and notched, drilled and bolted them together, was also able to bolt the back to 2 crossbars of the trailer. I feel comfortable with it and it gives me about 18" longer tongue

Plans are to build a 2x4 frame which will notch around tops of tires and give me 8 foot length and 58" width, WIll have a cutout over the tires with the original fender covering the exposed part .then flooring on that. WIll make a section or two of the floor lift up for some storage below, will go down 6-8" or so. After looking at all the tear drops and foamies, I decided to go simple box shape with a angle on the front. I am not needing extra insulation so just going for plywood walls for now,
All I really want is a place to crash at night and some storage. I have a couple of Solar vent fans I can put in the roof. I have about 50-60 watts of solar panels and several AGM batteries. I will have LED lights inside and out for lighting and decoration. I will be able to attach an awning off the side for shade and seats. I will put a 5000 btu AC unit in either back or front depending on how weight distribution falls out Walls will be approx 1/2 ply, with stiffeners glued on outside if needed. flat triangles 1/2" thick glued into corners and 3/4 " for front and rear walls to stiffen it up. I plan on glueing all joints and 2x4 crossbars at a few key locations.
As it comes together I will know what it needs. I work better in real time than from plans

Not worried about extreme temps, but the foam ideas are intriguing as well as canvassing. I want to make this simple enough to actually finish in a few months, but durable and possibly upgradeable later. Canvassing the outside sounds promising, but haven't learned enough yet to consider it seriously,
My goals are comfortable bed (54" x 72") storage for most of our gear, electric lights with a switch and a phone /USB charger, solar fans and a battery fan for night with a small bank of batteries , couple of windows that open with screening. Place to attach awnings to outside and then a couple of poles. I have a 5 gallon jerry can for water and 1 for fuel, may mount them on outside to fix weight distribution..........
Crude paint drawing to show the basics. Bottom right is my crude attempt to device a bell crank to mount a shock horizontally under the bed and dampen the bounciness , still debating shock and its mounting
Image

We currently go camping for up to a week at a time, with just a tent and what we bring in the station wagon. We will have an enclosed awning to set up our Kitchen in,

Hmmm,

I'd move the door in front of the wheels. Makes getting into and out of bed really easy. Just sit up and swing your legs out!

The ac in the front is very prone to leakage, unless you build a box like Rayvillan did.

Angib always says it's okay to build either out the sides, or over the front and back, but not both. But it looks like you have some pretty rigid framing for the sub-floor. I wonder what Angib thinks about that.

I think your idea for costs are quite a bit on the low side.

Mike...

Yes, the 2x4s will be all that is holding up the whole body - though do I see a galley bulkhead at the back that sits on the frame? If so, that will be carrying the weight of the back end of the body, not the 2x4s.

2x4s are a pretty heavy way of supporting a body but it's pretty simple and would work.

I agree that your cost estimates are too low. I spent around $600 on a simple foamy toy hauler/camper. Around a third each for structure, hardware (handles, hinges, etc.) and skin (canvas, glue, paint). I already had the trailer.

Definitely insulate. The additional cost and work is minimal and you'll enjoy the trailer much more for years to come. Use good materials. Again, it takes the same time to work with good materials as with junk and you'll be glad you did long after you've forgotten the extra cost.

I've done lots of car restos, I am aware of the rule of it takes 3 times as long and costs twice as much as you figure. Gotta start somewhere .
I plan on using 3/4 ply for front bulkhead to stiffen it up also, between that and the boxed Galley area I'm hoping to have a ridged box. I am thinking 2x4 lengthways at roof joint for strength . I do not plan on putting a whole lot of gear in it and a heavier stiffer trailer is ok.
I have thought about the AC condensate and will figure it out.
Good feedback on flooring extending over frame I figure I'm stiff enough to go 6" over each end and 3" each side. Once I finish the basic frame, I'll decide if I want to shrink it any.
I'll have a better idea once the floor frame is done, screwed and glued, Gusseted in the overhanging corners. The 2x4 frame gets me over the wheels more, gives me under floor storage and helps me tie sides to the trailer better to the frame.
I was thinking it would be better to have the door away from the Bed, I will think about that. I have revised this trailer 237 umpteen times already.
Lots of good info on here, I have profited already, plan on learning more.

Two doors. The hardware is going to run up your budget but cheaper than a divorce. And put them where your hips are. Much easier for getting in and out.

Thats why I was planning on door at foot of bed. We won't have to crawl over each other

My wife doesn't like sleeping next to a door also, I always have to be between her and the door at home. So I may have to move it in front of Axle on my side anyway.. Simple projects have a way of becoming un simple...

Take a look at Craigs list in your area. Good place to find cheap building materials and useful RV parts. Keep an eye out for a cheap pickup topper. a good source for cheap windows and a hinge for your rear hatch.

EDIT ( moved my post to this post, Did not see it was a double post )

Hey Dan

Welcome to the forms. The overall shape of your camper design had been done before and should work well. The flat back galley doors are easier to build and the usually offer more spare in the galley.

OK some points to look at. Your drawing is not really to scale. So simple graph paper might help you there. I don’t think your gonna have enough room for you door there. Another thing is getting in and your of the door so you can get to sleep. For the next week try to get in and out of your bed at home using only the back corner. Getting in is not bad it is the crawling back to the foot of the bed to start your backward exiting out that door that will be hard. There no Training video online for this stuff but I suggest you find a local gathering and check out a teardrop yourself and see how people get in and out of them. Here is a nice video and at the 1 min mark and the 6 min mark the lady is getting out and again back in.

The single shock idea is odd, but that describes what most people call us Teardrop camping folk anyhow. There are a few example of people setting the harbor tools and Norton's trailer up with shocks. You have to just search the build logs for that advice.

EDIT just remembers this link for a shock setup

Here is a link to my my first camper. It is to scale with a harbor tools trailer. It is a true 4x8 floor and 4 foot side walls, the camping equipment is the scale with what I own and take with me. My sleeping area is 68 long just two inches taller them me.

Hope this help and again welcome to the forums.
