We also use Melita, but a big one for a whole pot. We heat the water by any available means. At home it's an electric kettle.

I have a coffee press, but I never thought about taking that camping.

I've never seen the Melitta filter holder before. I really like the looks of that.

I use a small stainless steel press large enough to make one full cup of coffee. Just started drinking coffee a couple of months ago so the CRA was my first time camping with it. Ground the beans right before leaving. Have also found a source for raw beans so if I can come up with a good, small, portable grinder roasting fresh would be fun to do while hanging out at the campsite.

Just simple ground coffee in a percolator on the gas stove. Best and simplest for me! :)

Many home roasters start with the hot air popcorn popper method. However, my Ethiopian friends say their mothers/grandmothers just roasted it fresh in a something like a fry pan. A while back a good friend described the coffee ceremony to me in wistful tones of nostalgia & homesickness. When I suggested we try it she laughed & said it wouldn't be the same. Besides, it produces a lot of smoke & smell. Couldn't imagine trying it at her suburban home. Based on that description I'm guessing the best place to try it just might be a campsite in the woods.
Possibly a new use for cast iron?

YESsss! We used a small 5-cup aluminum percolator while camping, for most of our 55yrs married life. Couple of years ago the 'plastic' percolator 'bulb' got misshapen enough that it would no longer stay in the lid so we found a similar capacity stainless pot with a glass 'bulb'. It should last as long as we do ;) . We use good Columbian ground & it has always worked well for us.

Melita 1-cup, everywhere from at home to boy scout camp-outs in the dang-est locations.

Starbucks Via instant is really good, for instant, probably will try that out when I get the build done. Ha, that may be a race with the eventual heat-death of the universe... :D

Thanks for the ceremony link. Enjoyed reading about it.

Yes. It does get smoky but I thought the smell was quite nice. I did my first batch on the back deck using my propane camping stove. It took about 18 minutes of continuous stirring (think risotto) with a wire whisk for best results (if not using an air or Whirly-pop popcorn popper). I used a cast iron fry pan but am on the hunt for a small cast iron pot with higher sides. It is more work but when you're out camping why not bring along an easy activity you don't always have the luxury of time for when you're home and immersed in your busy day to day life?

I ended up with a nice picture of the darkening shades of the beans because the black flies kept coming at me and I'd fling my arm up which would, in turn, fling the whisk up, which would throw a bean or two out of the pot and onto the deck. When I collected them after I thought "Hey, these would make a nice picture!"

@ Stacie

I can recommend this grinder. You can see it on the left in my post above. It's about the size of a medium-sized pepper grinder, doesn't need electricity or batteries, is popularly-priced, and will grind a mug's worth of beans in 2-3 minutes. It gives you something to do while the water heats! It's also healthful sweat-free exercise.

Also, be on the lookout for antique cast-iron coffee roasters. I've never seen one, but I'm told they exist. They're like a clamshell with a long handle for roasting over the campfire. How perfect would that be? :D
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Coffee is important. I just got to do the first trip with our camper and brought a small glass press. Careful handling and it did well.

In the near future I see one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Thermos-NCI1000SS ... B00JFDHMPE) in my future. 34oz is enough coffee for me, and might even leave a little for the wifey ;), insulated and stainless steel makes it nearly perfect for camping.

I'd REALLY like to get into one of these, but the wifey wouldnt agree

Let me put in a good word for the Coleman stove top drip brewer. One of my Kahleefoornya camping buds has one, and it's the group go-to for morning coffee for the half a dozen of us. It works good and keeps the hot coffee coming.
