Truck Acquired

And I have you lot to thank for that!

In the thread about mail trucks and public auctions, I got curious and started paging through the links provided. I didn't find a mail truck, but what I did find was an amazingly local city agency auctioning off a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 with only 91,000 miles on it. I made an appointment for a test ride (can't drive a city vehicle) and look it over real good. I won the auction and am tickled about it. Off to pick it up in a little while.

This truck is supposed to have more than enough tow capacity for my build, a 16' vardo-type caravan I am calling Yiayia's Waggon. I hope to start construction in the spring, but in the meantime I can now haul windows and doors, etc. I can also tow my husband's 19' tent trailer. Whee!

Yes being from the picture I can see 8 lug nuts on the wheels which means it is a "real" 3/4 ton with the floater axle rearend, not one of the light duty 3/4 tons which have the heavier springs but the 1/2 ton rearend. This is a 'real' 3/4 ton PU. Now is the time to have it serviced and what I mean about serviced, it should have the rearend and transmission serviced. It's probably had the standard oil changes thought it's life time but one of the most overlooked things that hardly ever gets done is the transmission and rearend fluid and filter servicing. With the miles that are on it this would be the first thing I would be doing on it before I would be doing any towing along with having the brake system checked out and it's fluid changed also. This should be a very good tow vehicle. Take care.

Good find on the truck. To give you a little extra reassurance, I have a 2001 Chevy 2500 and it'll pull just about anything.
Here's a picture of it loaded with a 1600 pound Alaskan slide in truck camper and pulling a 2000 pound Shasta... barely knew they were back there.

Thanks and thanks!

I am loving the ride. It's really conducive to calm driving, which is my MO. I haven't been a "performance" type driver for some years now. I do want to do the recommended servicing. Definitely also needs new tires. I have to troubleshoot the climate control system, which is showing symptoms of needing a control panel replacement and possibly replacing the mode door motor. Both of these seem to be within my skill level, so I'm looking forward!

Tickled!

Thanks! Today is tire day. Found some good all-around tires that should do me for mostly on-road with some off road and winter use. Climate control system has been behaving nicely, so will leave that alone for now. Took it camping and realized size of fuel tank. Must be 30 gal - single fill up from Utah County to Bryce Canyon area and back!
