How Interests Come & Go

Postby Vedette » Sat Aug 08, 2015 1:18 pm

When I joined the Forum 3 1/2 years ago, it was to gather building information for my newly started project.
The first thing I noticed was the huge number of posts some members had?
After posting or a month or so, and reaching a grand total of 20 or so posts, I cold just not imagine how anyone could have ever got into the thousands as some had??
Well, now I know!
But, during this time I have noticed something else.
Those who posted lots were obviously committed or obsessed with there new found hobby or project.
I too fell into that category! Although my focus has changed as I progressed through the building stage, to the camping stage, to the promoting stage, and back to the building stage over these past 3 years. I realized that lots of the "high posting" Forum members that were here when I joined. Have since moved on to something else that has peaked their interest.
Again, I realized, that like them I too had come here from another Forum with a different interest group that I was very active and passionate about.
I still have those interests, but Teardrops have moved to the top of my priority list for now.
I dread the day (and I know it will come someday) that I am not as inspired to drop in here as much as I currently do.
And I miss those that have already vanished.....wishing I would have come here when they were here too.
Just a morning thought that I felt compelled to share with my fellow Forum members.

I'm with ya Brian, my main interest is and always has been Hot Rods, and that's where my Teardrop gets most of its use, swap meet's, the drags, El Mirage and the likes.

I seem to have run out of gas as far as building more cars for myself, but did just finish helping my youngest son complete his 72 Chevy SWB pickup after 8 years of complete disassembly with frame/suspension modifications and of course a little performance in the motor. It turned out absolutely stunning. He is pretty jazzed it's now on the road and so am I.....I'm jazzed it's over! :D

Now he's talking about putting a hidden hitch on it to tow dad's teardrop to a few hot rod functions.   I said "let's get er done"

Yes, I have been eating, sleeping, an drinking cars for almost 50 years now!
But, this year I have only gone to one Rod Run??? And I have replaced them on my schedule with Teardrop Gatherings.
It is all about priorities at the moment! ;)

I got away from teardrops, I went over to the dark side and got something I could stand up in.

The Little Guy Silver Shadow I had leaked like a sieve back at the galley hinge and rotted thru real fast.
It got tore down and made into a cargo trailer.
Was rebuilding Coleman lanterns but have drifted away from that for the time being.

I was building Hot Rod lamps for a while and ran out of steam, but now I have 4 to make for Xmas gifts, so I better get busy.

I too came from other forums, where I am quite active. I've been a car guy since before I was legally allowed to own one. I've had more cars in my 22 years I've been able to drive than most people will have in a lifetime. I camped (some) as a kid, and always wanted to do more as I got older. Now that my kid is of camping age, I wanted to find a way to do it affordably. Now for the wrinkle that made me go away for a while; I took my son tent camping, and he HATED IT. I mean despised it. It becomes difficult to spend the time and money needed to build one of these if you're pretty sure it will never get used. However, I now have a new motivation to finish it. He's now old enough that I don't need to feel bad if I'm not home every weekend. If he wants to come camping with me, he's always invited. Otherwise, I'll see him Sunday night, when I drag my butt out of the mountains.

How old is your son and what part of the tent camping didn't he like?

So, I'll be honest, my interest in this forum was very much a means to an end. I wanted to gather as much information as I could about building one, so I could get it done as easily and reasonably as possible, while doing so under budget and in a reasonable time frame.

Now its usable. Done will elude me for years I'm sure, but its been out twice, and there are many more trips on the horizon.

My post count here will probably never be high, but I'll be lurking probably forever, with at least the occasional check in :D

At least until the next build comes on my horizon...
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.
