Coffee Pot for camping

We used to carry these for Mr. JB, and I always got a kick out of the instructions to dunk the bag. As a tea drinker, this seemed pretty self evident, but for coffee drinkers....

Shopping for the trip last month, I discovered Folgers instant crystals in little single serve packs. Mr. JB is fine with Folgers, so these worked well for him. He just wants coffee with caffeine in the morning.

Bob and Dale...yep we love our Moka and use it all the time. However, for years I've been taking along those little coffee dunkers. People would ask why in the world would I bring little coffee bags to Rome or Paris. Well, most mornings I prefer to have a nice quiet cup of coffee without having to go outside or in the middle of the night. Also, while I love the coffee in Rome, I absolutely HATE Parisian coffee. With camping, when I realize I spilled all the coffee, I still have my little dunkers.

I use the single cup Melita both home and camp. But i am interested in the percolator. How does one judge when its done? Same with that shinny thing. Does it finish itself?

I tried the Folgers bags, but was never able to get it strong enough, even using three bags and leaving them in there for a long time...

Starbucks Vias, worked well for me, and I still use those backpacking. I do use more than the serving states, but hey I like my coffee like I like my women, hot, strong, and not afraid to punch me in the mouth.

My favorite was java pods, pressed liquid coffee extract in individual packets. Add 8-10oz hot water and you have coffe, but it seems they went the way of the dinosaurs. Those were awesome because with 8oz of water it was GOOD and strong!

Melitta filer holder is what stays in my camping stash. Hard to beat it's packability/weight/ease of cleaning.

At home I use a Chemex (manual pour over). Camping I use a plastic manual drip cone http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BUDDTY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 same idea as the Melitta. I can use my Chemex filters in it as well by folding the end so it fits flat on the bottom. I can't do press coffee as I do not care for the sludge sometimes left behind. Water is boiled on stove regardless if I'm in electric or not. Beans are ground before I leave.

DebraP these aren't as inexpensive as other presses but they are definitely 100% sludge free. Have been using the small press for a few months now and can say that it works as advertised. http://espro.ca/espro-press/I figured an all stainless construction would be perfect for camping (rather than the traditional glass). Now they have a new single cup travel press coming out but I'll stick with what I have. It works great.

Hmm.. Might have to check one out. I've got several French Press, loved the taste, but sludge was a deal breaker. Then I discovered the Chemex which makes wonderful coffee, but it's glass. So found the pour over cone made with plastic which works on the same principle as the Chemex it being a pour over.

I use the colman self contained propane drip coffee maker. I can bring it down to the waters edge or where ever I want and have fresh coffee at sunrise.

I can't stand coffee however my wife started drinking it a few years ago. We will be camping with no power this month so I got her a my Jo. it takes Keurig cups you pull your boiling water in and pump the top we'll see how she likes it.https://www.myjocoffee.com/go.html

Have also found a source for raw beans so if I can come up with a good, small, portable grinder roasting fresh would be fun to do while hanging out at the campsite.

Many home roasters start with the hot air popcorn popper method. However, my Ethiopian friends say their mothers/grandmothers just roasted it fresh in a something like a fry pan. A while back a good friend described the coffee ceremony to me in wistful tones of nostalgia & homesickness. When I suggested we try it she laughed & said it wouldn't be the same. Besides, it produces a lot of smoke & smell. Couldn't imagine trying it at her suburban home. Based on that description I'm guessing the best place to try it just might be a campsite in the woods.
Possibly a new use for cast iron?

Ive seen them roasted in a wok in Indonesia and it looked to work well

I'm a home coffee roaster - I use a drum on my barbeque rotisserie, but I've roasted in a two quart saucepan over a propane burner in the past. It's pretty easy - just use a whisk to constantly stir the beans until you hear the beginning of first crack (popping sounds), then back off the heat a little. If you want darker roasted beans, continue cooking into second crack - more popping, but softer. I belong to a green coffee buying coop - one of our members tried roasting beans in a campfire popcorn popper over a campfire with some success.
