Intro - and what would you make of this?

Postby BillT » Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:26 pm

Hello all -

I actually was paid to take this away, by the original owner who bought it brand new in 1970.

It was a little pop-up camper. He told me he and his wife took it across the United States more than once and had a lot of good times traveling and camping in it. Eventually, it started wearing out and leaking, and he parked it in his back yard. He finally gutted the rotten interior to get rid of it bit by bit. This empty shell is what was left and he had no way to remove it himself.

Best part is, he still had the title, which I now have.

It's a tiny little thing - the body is only about 6 feet wide (or less) and 8 feet long (or less). It's very lightweight right now - I and one other guy lifted the entire thing up into my truck to haul it away. The title says its registered weight was 720 lbs.

I'm toying with the idea of using it as a starting point for some kind of little pop-up/slide-out camper. Note the remnants of the slides, which formerly had twin beds in them that slid out when pop-up was set up. The floor is rotten, so it will require complete disassembly and basically starting over from the ground up. But the frame seems to be solid enough, and at least the main basic pieces are there.

I love the little orange sides of the thing - it's got a really nice retro/vintage feel to it.

Welcome to the Forum
You are going to get a lot of suggestions here.
Not all will be along or near the ideas you have for this little trailer project.
Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, and would like to lead you down their path.
Beware! :R :R :R
You need to rethink the wheel size if you wish to tow any major distance at highway speeds......and so it starts!

WOW that really brings back memories. The is pretty close to the first one your family use to use camping.
Two twin beds, poles hold up the bed, and canvas tent topper. Man painted up that would look sweet behind a 1963 ford Falcon.

Keep us posted on what you do with it.

I got one similar when I scrapped trailers. The top was gone and owner had built something for a lid. I removed everything and added new tires. I called it my cute little trailer. But just wasn't heavy enough for my wood hauling. So before I could break it. I sold it. Yes I would have.
I live a couple miles from a campground, some tent camper bought it to haul all their gear.

Howdy BillT,
Welcome to the site from Central Minnesota ... :shake hands:

We watch a TV show called Flippin' RVs back here and watched them rebuild a similar little trailer a couple months ago (Their shop, Flyte Camp, is in Oregon) ... They rebuilt the wood and metal then, had a tent/canvas shop make new canvas and an upholstery shop recover the cushioned pieces ... booth, beds, etc ... A really great show to watch for ideas ...

Good luck on you project :applause:
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)
