5X8 roof

I'm at the point in my build where I can now install the roof paneling and then the skin. If it were a 48 it would be no problem but it's a 5X8 and materials don't come in 5X8 sheets. My question is. How have you folks constructed your roofs with 4X8 Materials. I have ideas but thought I would ask your advice. Thanks a bunch.

On both 4-wides and 5-wides, I use 1/8" 5' x 5' Baltic Birch and lay the seam on a spar.

That's what I was thinking except finding 5X5 materials. All I can come up with is 4X8. I guess I could do that and add some spars. I just hate the waist.

I live in a town of 3,000 that's three hours from the nearest Home Cheapo. When I need 5' x 5' Baltic, all's I have to do is walk into the one lumberyard in town on a Monday and ask them to order five sheets or however many I need. They show up on Thursday.

You might ask a small lumberyard if they can order it for you.

Im just using 2400x1200 or 6x4 sheets and joining them on a spar like tony.
Takes 3 sheets but i got them cheap enough

I wish there were the smaller lumber yards around me but here in the metro Atlanta area the big box stores have put the little guy's out of business. Ask some these people at HD or Lowes about custom cuts and they look at you like you have a third eye and something nasty coming out of your nose. I'm just trying avoid as many seams as I can. Thanks for the input guys that's the way I'll go. This is my first build and quite an education.

I've read that 5x8 or 5x10 is available but very hard to find. Most people use 4x8 and seam it on a spar. You'll figure out something to do with the leftovers. ...Lightweight drawer bottoms or shelves or....?
Try not to seam it on a curve or you may have double trouble. ( Don't ask... )

I had a similar problem here on another project and found a wholesale Plywood supplier within 3o miles through the
local Woodworking Club...

Talk to a builder. I found a good lumber supplier who does a ton with roofers, who was able to get my 5x5 baltic birch 1/8th for under $13 bucks a sheet.

Your real roofers are not buying sheathing at Home Despot or Low(standards)

Hi Stormrider - Hardwoods, Inc. in Mableton, Ga. (close to Smyrna), Phone #404-792-0910, has 5 x 5 sheets of 1/8" Baltic Birch. I paid $15.58 per sheet a little over two years ago. That is what I used to build mine last year and ended up with one seam on the double spars for my roof vent both inside (front spars) and the outside (back spars). I then found 5' x 10' sheets of .040 aluminum in Norcross, Ga and put on a single piece roof from the nose to the Hurricane hatch. I don't have the name of the business there at the moment, but if you pm me, I will dig it up for you. I'm happy to see another local Teardropper. Good luck with your project.

Find out where the cabinet makers buy lumber & sheet goods in your area. There are shops which are making kitchens & book cases & I guarantee they don't go to home centers for their materials. I just paid $12.38 per sheet for 6 sheets of 1/8" X 5' X 5' baltic birch from a hardwood distributor here in Tucson, so the greater metro area near you must have a place selling it. They will have better quality & cheaper prices.
