AC unit and road shock?

Postby 40MikeMike » Sun Aug 16, 2015 10:51 am

With summer soon ending I'm planning on picking up an elcheapo big bix ox store AC unit, ... I've searched, but...
Any suggestions, I'm building an off road type (dirt/fire roads) already have a new 6 lug axle mounted for larger tires, probably going for e rated tires for longer life, so I know I'll experience more 'dynamic shock loading' to my AC, My current plan is to use high density foam like sleeping bag mat foam and brace/shore the entire bottom of the unit.

It's kind of like buying a computer Apple is nice buy has crappy internals, and weak soldering.... Hopefully somebody has found the "tough book" of AC units.

My concerns are price point, and construction ( internals) and yes I know there are RV type AC units but they cost three times the wallyworld price.

Thanks for your time and thoughts.

We plan to take ours out and carry it in the back of the pickup (padded) ... It just takes a couple minutes to take the foam plug out and stick the AC in the space ... a space which is already tilted to provide proper drainage . ;)
There’s no place like Foam !

A lot of us have the el-cheapo, end of season, on sale unit. I don't think I 've ever seen a post from someone who's unit failed....

I have taken mine down some really ruff roads without any issues. I would not be too worried about it.

Another reason I think Shadow Catcher hast eh right idea. No permanent mount = no road vibration damaging the unit.

probably going for e rated tires for longer life

I frequently take my 'drop on rough roads. This last week it was a place a car couldn't go. Too steep, too big of rocks and too deep of ruts. It was one of the few places I've turned the 4x4 on while towing because of the grade and loose rocks. It was a five-mile an hour fourteen mile "walk". I run six-ply LT radials on my rims. I think radials make a big difference on how my teardrop rides.

Well worth the "walk."

Fortunately we don't need AC in the middle of Idaho (and there's not that many current bushes to plug in to anywho).
