Tandem axle...Standy???

Postby Whiskeysmoke » Fri Aug 21, 2015 8:23 pm

Hello All.

Newby here... I am planning (hoping) to build a camper that I can stand up in. I have been feverishly scanning the HOF posts and cannot wait to get started. I already had a HF bolt together 4x8 trailer that was going to be my frame. But, I just found a 6x10 welded tandem axle frame for crazy cheap and I jumped on it. I pick it up tomorrow and then it will be back to the proverbial drawing board. The new frame is certainly going to be heavier but it also opens up a lot of possibilities. This will be my first trailer build but I have built cedar kayaks, dinner tables and whiskey barrel smokers. This should be a fun project. :worship: Anyway, It may be some time before you see any progress on the build. I still haven't decided what material to use. Wood/frame or FOAM? Thinking foam to ry and offset the added weight of the heavy frame... Time (and your advice) will tell which way I decide to go.

Hi Curt, welcome to tnttt, :shake hands:
One of the first things you should do after you pick up your frame is to get some photos if it and post them on your thread :pictures:
From that you are likely to get all sorts of suggestions.
My first thoughts are, if you are looking at the weight issues, you should get rid of one of the axles.
This will get rid of a lot of weight, and also, what weight you have on the finished frame (if you are planning on a light weight build) will be able to work one set of springs, where with tandem it will be too rigid and will be inclined to bounce along behind you and do its best to shake things apart.
Looking forward to seeing what plans you come up with and good luck with your build.

Tandem standy is what mine was, just sold it a month ago.
Trailer towed over 25,000 miles without a glitch, strong, stable and towed straight as an arrow.
Definatly heavier than a single, but the cool factor in my books was worth it
Enjoy the journey and make sure you do a build log
