I see what Scott is saying about your vent placement. There is quite a bit of water coming off the hatch when it is up in a hard rain. Hopefully the 1" curb on the vent well be enough. I'm wonderin more about the plastic hinge and the vent over lapping it doesn't look like there is much wood where you plan on mounting them. It would be alot easier to move the vent now than after you get it skinned. Sorry I hadn't noticed that sooner.

Thanks for review. I wasn't thinking about the water flow when the hinge is raised. I too wish I had thought this through. Problem is, the gap between the other spars is 12", not 14" since I averaged the remaining distance to make them equidistant. Not enough space for the fan.
Do you think it might work to add a styrofoam "dam" slightly above the hinge point to divert water around the fan? If I have to tear the roof apart and start over I will, but that's what it would take at this point. Dang.

And as far as fitting the hinge and the fan flange, they will meet on a 2X2 - I plan to put the fan in place, assuming I keep it in this location, and if the 2x2 is not enough space for both I can add another furring strip. The water shed problem is major, though.

I used a continueous hinge on my first WW and didn't realise that they are only water proof in one direction. I used a 3/4 angle on the leaky side and it worked out fine. You could try something like that. Since the fan is raised above the roof level there might not be a problem anyway. But it's ultimately your call, it is a lot of work to move it now but it would be alot more later. Darn I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, we spent alot of time on the hatch work and I didn't even think about the vent placement.

What about a simple v shaped rain diverter to keep the water off the hinge line .. ???

My reply apparently didn't get posted. I was also thinking about a v-shaped dam. Since then I realized that I can slide the fan forward about 6" by cutting the next spar and rebuilding a small section of the roof. Two layer roof would allow me to glue furring strips on top of the lower layer to attach fan. Think 6" is enough distance from the hinge?

Charlie just went out and checked, and mine is a foot but I think that 6" would probably work. You just need enough room to allow the water to slow and spread out so that the full force of the off flow from the hatch doesn't hit directly on the vent curbing. Water wants to follow the path of least resistance just give it a chance to do it's thing.

Thanks Gary - lost a day to the redo but the feedback all of you gave me was clearly needed. I may still add a small diversion dam in front of the fan.

I'm with Gary - I don't think a V shape is shape is what you need. Maybe just a piece of angle wider than the fan to divert the water. Beware of the route of diversion that it doesn't go over the door or else you'll need a drip edge above the door.

Relocated the fan and glued canvas to the roof sections. Finally used up the Menards drop cloth - frays and makes for messy seams. Vinyl spackle is a wonder - seems to have some adhesive properties like GS. Will finish covering the nose and add some pics later this week.

Making slow progress on canvas. Seams another job that would be really handy to watch someone else do first. Mine are ugly and time-consuming to repair. How odes the surface look when painting canvas that has seams covered with vinyl spackle (smooth vs canvas texture)? Is it just a matter of several layers of paint to over the canvas texture to match the surfaces covered with vinyl?
Will get to next pics but time short - need to finish up this mayor gig so I can get on to more important things.

CPO, Covering can be anything you have the patience to make it ... Just take your time and make it as Good as you can ... Best to have some extra helping hands if you've never covered before , and then you can always find some "craft ladies" that have much experience with this kind of thing , but just not on this scale ... and pics would be nice to see what you mean.

When all's done it really doesn't make any difference how neat it looks , just that it's done correctly to give the needed strength and waterproofing ... Nobody ever complains about seams in a tent eh ? ...

Thanks Glen - it should pass the 15 foot rule. Seems every time I sand more canvas pops up at the seam. Should gradually take shape will additional layers of vinyl spackle. Come to think of it, I was always terrible at this with sheetrock too, so no surprise.
Will be gone till Tuesday and will finish seams, then attach canvas to underside of floor, then pics. Haven't taken any new ones and too embarrassed to send now anyway.
