Converting fridge into cooler

Postby mikeschn » Wed Sep 02, 2015 10:51 am

Just wondered, has anyone ever converted a mini compressor fridge into a cooler. I was thinking about getting a small fridge, and maybe building a foam box and dropping the guts of the fridge into it. Kinda like a poor mans gas absorbtion cooler!

Any ideas?

Other then it being hevy, why would it not work? I visualize you removing the compressor and stuff. Would you use it with the door on the top?

If it's a working fridge, why not use it as such when shore power is available? And then when shore power isn't available you could put ice or those blue freezer packs in the fridge to keep it cold.

Or spend ~$500 and get an Indel B "truck fridge" from equipt1.com. We have one and love it - highly recommended.

It runs off 12v or 110ac in either max cool or eco mode, has a highly efficient compressor, interior light, all digital controls, and can cool to below 0F to become a freezer if you want.

Not being dependent on ice will change your camping life...

Makes one wonder why someone in the Foamie ‘ section didn’t come up with a SUPER cooler as yet ??? Seems 4"-6” of foam should keep ice for a loooong time ...

I made one about that size with powdercoated steel skins inside and out.
I was building coolròms at the time and it was super efficient

I made a "porta-keg-erator" using foamie techniques. Works very well. I sandwiched two layers of 1 inch foam and covered the outside with 1/4" ply. I did fail to make it water tight, so it needs a trash bag liner, but it kept a remarkable amount of ice for 24 hours before I had to dump it out because it was leaking. More solid ice than the igloo cooler that had water bottles in it over the same period.

Friends at the party thought it was awesome. I'll try to find some pics if there is interest.

I remember a stand alone freeze we had at the DQ I worked at as a kid. Super insulated building with what looked like a AC stuck in the wall at the back. worked great.
