where to carry a battery

Postby PKCSPT » Sun Sep 06, 2015 5:40 pm

I want to get a battery to run my fan overnight, real simple set up. Can I safely carry it in my car til I get to my campsite and set it up when I get there. I don't want to add any more weight to my hitch, I already have a box I put there with my tent and now I will have added some from my canoe with my one man canoe loader. Hesitate to put it inside my camper for transport where it might get bounced around, it would have sit on my mattress. With my car and gear the front passenger side floor is where I have the most room. I pull with a beetle, space is tight.

I personally cannot come with a reason why you could not carry it in your vehicle. I would think you would keep it in a container such as a plastic marine battery box. This way you keep the dirty and acid stuff away from your other stuff. But depending on the size battery you get, it could be heavy to lift in and out of the car.

I will second Bob's reply. The battery box would only add about a pound to the battery weight. Worth way more than its cost just as an insurance measure.

If you put it in galley area (behind axle) you will counter balance some of the weight you are putting on tongue/hitch from added weight on tongue... Of course it will depend on battery size /weight and how you intend to charge it....

Might find better answer in electrical section....

Dale if it goes inside the tear it sits on my mattress, I only have a shelf for a galley. But I had not thought of getting a battery box, great tip and I will do that. Thanks everyone!

I took the Battery out of Miss Piggy yesterday (first time since I put it in April 2013) and remembered how heavy a DC27 really is.
I am so glad it is behind the wheels and not on the tongue. :worship: Because a Dale said, that counter weight as opposed to the dead weight on the tongue, really will affect your tongue weight.

Can I safely carry it in my car

I'd recommend you put it in your trunk, if you've got room. Today's vehicles are incredibly crashworthy, but imagine being in a rollover with a fifty pound hunk of lead bouncing around inside.

I think a Group 24 is about the smallest marine battery they make. I think they've got about 40 useable amps, so a Fantastic Fan would run for fifteen or twenty hours before you'd begin to damage it.

There is a thought. I don't plan on rolling my car, but should that happen a 100lb dog rolling around is bad enough. Since I take my grandkids I really have to think this through a bit more

Ive got a realy small agem thats about 15 ah but lasts a suprisingly long time .
Iits about the with of 2 packets of smoke and the hight of one and about 6 inches long.
Completly sealed and safe to use inside.
Might work for you.
The added bonus is they use them in servers and alarms
and replace them every year so the can be picked up cheap

Dale, where do they sell used ones? Might be an idea to pick up one, try it and if I like it could go with a new one. I was planning on going to a battery plus or fleet farm.

Check out govt or big corperation auctions.
Call the it department of places that run big servers or alarm companies, fire and burglar.
You can get them at fea markets ect too.
New they are about 25 here, used but as new they are around 5.
I use them for my boat electronics and i get days. I take 2 or 3 with me if i go away

You might check into a motorcycle battery or lawn tractor battery. Either should be able to power your fan just not sure how long.....

If you don't need a lot of battery, because the reply above this one is suggesting a motorcycle battery, how about getting a jump box? It would be clean, not take up a bunch of space, and you could use it to jump start your car if needed, and it is easy to recharge.

It sounds like the battery that Dale is referring to is one of the pair that go in GoGo handicap scooters, You can find a bunch of different amp ones on EBay. They have a mat construction and they are sealed so they won't leak in any position, I just bought some of the higher amp ones, and the price was around $32 apiece, freight included.
