windows ?

Postby BobBash » Thu Sep 10, 2015 9:57 am

I was wondering if anyone knows how water tight one of those sliding truck/truck cap windows might be ? I was thinking of a front mount window install on a Benroy trailer with a rock guard covering it ???

That's an interesting idea, not sure how it would hold up going down the highway in heavy rain. I've owned several over the years in trucks and never had one leak...but again, that is in a rear facing install.

Mine was after market slider with factory rubber seal. Seal never leaked but the sliders did. But as stated above rear facing.

I was thinking that the slider might leak a bit but with a hinged rock guard over it in transit( like the old Shasta's) & hinged up while camping it might be worth a try .................

It would be tempered glass so that's a plus. The sun visor isn't really the best rock guard but might work as a leak guard.

That might be a workable option, and would give a nice window awning when parked.

I was told by everyone i asked that made or sold windows never put an opening window of any configuration on the front.
They will all leak.
Fixed window no problem

What if the rock guard had a rubber seal around it that closed against the flat front wall of the Benroy ?

You would probably want to attach the guard with a hurricane hinge as well.....starting to sound like a lot of extra parts and money just to be able to open that front facing window.

a true residential awning window would be designed to protect when closed from gale force wind driven rain and would be far less prone to leaks.
Instead of a slider you can half open you can now completely open the full width of the opening. The window pane would allow you
to leave the window open during all but the most severe of rain storms. While you may want a stone guard over it the modern tempered glass would
resist all but the most direct attack of road debris. Sure would be nice on those hot, high humidity, rain shower like we see.

The pic shown was of a window for sale for $35 & I'm sure they could be found cheap in a number of places . At that cost it might be worth building an additional cover with a seal , just thinking out loud .................... I like the thought of additional air flow & daylight/moonlight into a small place like a teardrop.............

BobHenry ,
I have a few of the awning windows that you speak of in my house that crank out like a casement window . The only thing is, the wall thickness required would be a good bit more than a typical teardrop wall & the awning window would protrude either outside or inside a fair amount ............. Again , just thinking out loud ........
