Lights: Which get used, which don't?

Postby anon1 » Mon Sep 14, 2015 6:57 pm

Hello,

I'm debating whether to install the typical "porch light" that most people install. I usually have a headlight or flashlight on me when camping and don't think that the porch light would really get used. Also the reading lights that most people install inside might see very little use by me as pretty much all reading is done on a tablet computer these days.

I'll likely streamline the outside some by leaving off porch lights and use a dome light inside for general lighting and some rope-light around the upper corner for indirect mood lighting.

Which lights did you install that you never use?
Are there any locations that you wish that you had installed a light?

Thanks for your suggestions.

It has value in finding your tear. Ours are LED and I used amber arrays which are "bug" lights and distinctive.

I do not "plan" on having one. But I plan on having an awning and awning lights when camped.

I don't use my porch light. It turns out that it shines straight out away from the trailer and not down on the ground next to the trailer. I do use the reading light in the trailer, even though I read on a tablet. You need some degree of background light even with a self-illuminated tablet or e-reader.

My only lights are (1) inside overhead and (2) overhead galley lid, anything else I use a lantern or flashlight. Works for me, but maybe I'm just used to or adjusted to it.

I ran a total of 8 fused circuits to all corners for lights I THINK I might want in the future lol.

Porch lights are low/med lumen amber LEDs. I can make them brighter by adding more/different LEDs.
I have 2 LED puck ceiling lights, and 2 behind-the-head reading lights for reclined reading. Two LED pucks on leaf switches inside the cabinets that go on when the door opens. 2 LED pucks in the galley hatch, and LEDs inside the galley cabinets. LEDs inside my battery/tongue box that turn on when lid is opened.

We use all the lights, half are LED.
We have 4 reading lights in the cabin, 2 cabin mood lights, 2 porch lights, 3 under the teardrop, 2 in the galley, several inside the galley cabinet, one inside the tongue box, one outside the tongue box.
I don't read in the cabin but the lights come in handy when looking for stuff in the cabinets or in the bedding.
The porch lights come in handy when locking or unlocking the doors or to find the teardrop when coming back from the rest room.
You can never have too much light since it all can be turned on or off.
I also can practice my guitar under one of the porch lights.
Why fumble around in the dark with a flashlight.

I chose not to install one although I put a small one under the trailer door. Don't use it. Didn't ruin the lines

I have 2 reading lights for sitting up, 1 central light for general lighting (all 3W LED Pucks)
I have a 1W red LED for a night light for my kids
I have 2 3W white LED that will be installed in my galley on a remote (on/ off/ dimmer). Currently using battery powered LEDs here
There is a cigarette plug in the galley I will run an LED when I make my awning over the winter

Inside I have 2 puck leds for reading and a 12v fluro for general lighting. In the galley I have 3foot of led strip lights which is very bright :D and in the tongue box I have led strip lights as well as its a pain carrying a torch every where. Also have a very narrow porch light (also led).the porch light also doubles as a light for the change/privacy tent I attach to the door( one of those springy fold up tent types)all up probably use no more than 20 watts all up so the battery lasts pretty good even if we use the TV (not much) and the 12v shower plus the pressure water pump when using the sink for dish washing. If camping for a few days in the 1 spot I put up my 3metre folding gazebo and Bobs your uncle. Yes I do like my comfort :D

Ive got wayyyy to many lights but they all turn on and off seperatly so i have my options open.
Ive got a 300mm main light in the cabin plus 2 reading lights.
Rhese all are switched independantly.
Ive got 3 1 watt lights wired as a group...one in each bulkhead cupboard for finding stuff.
Ive got one on the galley hatch and im adding at least one to the shelves.
Ive got a porch light each side and ill be adding lights in the underfloor storage.
Im niggtblind to the point of rediculous especialy since loosing some sight to diabeties and a priority for me was to be able to turn on a light, find what im looking for without frustration and turn it off.
Plus you only get to wire them up once without ugly add ons so that was my plan

We don't have porch lights and don't miss not having them. We have red LED lighting underneath the teardrop and in the galley area. (Each location is on an independent switch.) The red color doesn't attract bugs and doesn't blind you when it is dark all around.

Yes... back ground or ambivalent light other wise lighting from tablet is harsh....

I wish I had put a light on the front of the trailer to make hitching/unhitching in the dark much easier.

I installed 5 lights inside and a porch light for both doors and haven't been a bit sorry. I use them all; but, not all at the same time. Inside, I normally have a light on in the area where I am working/reading/etc; and, when I leave that area, I turn it off. I use my porch lights all the time and it is sometimes the only way I find my way back to my trailer when in a dark campground. I have yellow covers on them so that there are no problems with bugs. That makes it even easier to discern which camper is mine. Sometimes, I forget to turn those off when I go to bed; but, that doesn't seem to cause the battery to go down much at all. A few years ago, I switched all but one light over to LED. (The one that I didn't switch over is Fluorescent.) If I hear a sound outside, it really helps to switch the porch light on from the inside and see what's going on outside. Plenty of lights is the one "luxury" that I allowed myself and I love it! :)
