A tale of 2 Canopies

Postby Java Jack » Sat Sep 12, 2015 10:47 pm

For those interested, just updated the blog with some thoughts on choosing a canopy.

We have 2 different canopies we use depending on weather conditions. How do you shade your campsite?

Actually it does quite well. It is larger than your typical easy up at 10 x 10. It is also straight leg as opposed to the typical slant leg so it provides more coverage. It has legs that are thicker than a regular easy up so it is more durable. It also has quick snap buttons (instead of the typical bubble type button you have to fight with). The biggest problem is that it is bulky and a little on the heavy side. One person can set it up, but not easily. It is much better to have 2 people handy. It does stand up to winds OK if you stake it down and use guy lines.

The Coleman Event Shelter. I don't think these are available anymore, but, I really like it. 14' X 14' gives plenty of coverage.

I had bought one of those originally but when I set it up in my front yard it seemed way too low so I ended up taking it back. It was pretty heavy so it seemed like it would withstand some weather without issue for sure.

Looking at yours gives a good perspective though. Thanks for the pic.

Jack, Don't know how much height you might need/want, but that TD in the pic stands 76" tall and you can still open the hatch while under the Event Shelter. That's one of the reasons I chose it. You're are definitely right about the weight. It is quite heavy. In addition the top section is "vented" in a way that was advertised to let wind out the top without rain getting in. I've used it in a couple of moderate rains storms and seemed to work well. It's a little work to set up, but, I can do it by myself if have to.

Looking at your pic and comparing them to my memories, I am guessing my memories are deceptively wrong. I just seems to be low but looking at your pics, it probably would have been great. I am happy with my current solutions but I can see that the Coleman would likely have worked well too. It just did not seem like it at the time.
