Does anyone know if "looks" have any bearing on being stolen. Would a colorful paint job deter a thief? Or are they looking for something more sedate, less noticeable.

I don't know that it would be enough of a deterrent. But car thieves are known to steal more "generic" cars as they are more difficult to find. When you report a stolen vehicle they ask if there are any marking that's would identify your car easily. If you have a grey 2002 Honda accord with no stickers and nothing special about it, they will have a difficult time finding it. If you painted it hot pink it would be easier to spot among all the other vehicles.
Cheers,
Scott

Thieves suck. You work really hard to get nice things and punks come along and take it. I have no mercy for thugs like that, I hope they are caught and severely punished. I am getting ready for a 2 week road trip, I will keep an eye out for it.

I just ordered a Wheel lock earlier today for my trailer. I have been reviewing various security options for situations just like this. I figure I would have a multilayered approach.

I have locking lug nuts on the rims so the tires can't be removed so, when paired with the wheel lock by Trimax, it should help deter would be thieves.
I am looking at getting the Proven Industries Coupler Lock (lets you secure the coupler and the safety chains)
I have been looking at GPS trackers as final back up plan.
Replacement Insurance for when all else fails

I did look at various coupler locks but most of them were easily defeated in less than a minute with a crow bar, sledge or drill. It looks like the only really good coupler locks were Megahitch, AMPlock, and Proven Industries. Only the Proven Industries will let you secure the safety chains which was really important to me. I have seen videos where thieves used the safety chains to haul the trailer off.

I hope to have enough deterrent that thugs would move on to an easier target. I don't worry about my trailer at home because it is in my garage and then my car is parked in front of the garage in a single car driveway. So, to steal my trailer you could have to move at least 1 or more cars, then get inside the garage. And after all that work you would be caught on one of the security cameras I have around the exterior of my home.

I'm not paranoid, I just hate thieves that much.

They should be insured on an auto policy or a recreational vehicle policy. The homeowners policy may provide some coverage for theft...usually only $1500...and only if it is stolen from the residence premises listed on the policy.
