4x8 teardrop build

Postby JBolg » Fri Sep 11, 2015 10:45 am

whats up TNTTT!!

Been a long time follower of the forum and in the process of a 4x8 teardrop build.
Being built by my brother and I, and we have had a great time with this build

We built this trailer using bits and pieces of all kinds of build journals and resources from this site as well as the generic benroy plans as well.

WE used mostly oak through out the whole build aside from exterior wood and some maple and pine as well inside.

for building materials we started with a 4x8 harbor freight trailer with the 1729lb capability. painted it black let it dry and then got to work.

Im gonna post a bunch of photos that shows the progress up to where we are now.

on the inside footside cabinet we will be putting a 19" flatscreen in the void space between the 2 cabinets and the head side interior we built a custom speaker box with a little cubby to put your ipod/phone or whatever there while its plugged into the stereo. under the speaker box is the a raceway with 4 toggle switches that swings down and exposes the 12v electrical and master switch. The 4 switches control the inside lights, galley lights, porch light and vent. On the underside raceway of the footside cabinets we put in a 110 outlet with 2 usb charger ports in it as well. In the galley there is a 12v outlet and a 110v GFI outlet too.

we built the frame to the hatch yesterday but waiting on the hurricane hinge to arrive so we can move forward with it.

The converter, circuit breaker and inlet will all be in today so this weekend I will make a tongue box and finish the electrical for good!! :D

Im short on time but would love to get into more detail if anyone has any Questions, comments, criticism ect

Ill be back with more updates in a few days when i get the electrical all finished up

Nice. Did you use oak for any particular reason?

We used oak because to us its the nicest wood, and the most expensive available here unfortunately. We love the grain in the wood and how it looks when stained. 8)

Because lowes here had a sheet of maple stuck with the oak we got one interior oak wall and one maple wall. Lesson learned and we never take from a pile of plywood or any wood for that matter with out ensuring its the same as the others in the pile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x  but its all good we left it and moved on at the time.

The last couple days we built a tongue box to hold the battery, circuit breakers, converter and we worked on finalizing the electricity. For the electricity we will have a power cord run through the side of the box and into the 30amp rv power panel. From the panels 30amp breaker we ran it to a subpanel with 2 15 amp breakers. One 15 amp for the GFCI in the galley and one 15 amp to the interior 110v outlet. The galley's 110v outlet also has an outlet in the box for the converter to be plugged into. So with this set up the galley outlet will not have all 15 amps available to it. I just have to figure out how many amps the 45 amp 9200 series PD converter uses itself. Its not on the box, the unit or the install directions so i will call them direct.
In the pics of the internals in the box are just sitting there and we are roughly hooking it up to ensure it all worked before the final install location for each piece of equipment. (pics to come)

Put some Emulsion on the bottom of the box for weatherproofing and we will be covering the outside with aluminum to match the trailers exterior when its finished.
yesterday after looking it over we have decided to add a small slope to the box to allow water to flow down and not pool on the box, so that will get done this weekend.

we also built the hatch frame out of 3/4" ply and skinned the outside. we are waiting on the hurricane hinge to arrive to finish the hatch and add the 2 led lights to it.

Here are a couple pics:

Here is what we have so far with the build.
Still need to get props and TV installed.
As for the rear hatch we have to decided what to do about making a water proof seal and finish the side trim or molding down the sides of the hatch. Also in a stupid rushed mistake we put the door on back wards so now we have a suicide door  :? just had to flip the inside portion of the window 180 degrees and then good to go lol. just have to ensure the deadbolt is locked when going down the road. Assuming this wont do anything negative when getting inspected?? If so ill have to flip it around but really dont want to mess with it.
the front box is 90% done and will be completed very soon. trim down the lower edges of both sides of the camper will be installed this weekend.

It has been napped in but not camped in over night.
Ive road tested it after cleaning and repacking the trailer bearings as well and it was a great success up to 60mph
