Solar Roof Coating on Sides

Postby craigatx » Fri Sep 18, 2015 8:40 pm

Has anyone used a reflective roof coating on the sides of a trailer? I got a good deal on a black trailer, but it heats up so fast it's unbearable pretty quickly in the summer. I thought about using paint, but thought the roof coating might work better - if it will stay on. Any suggestions?

Has it already been insulated?? How deep? Thermal breaks?? Solar roof coating on roof??

Need more info - what's already been done or is it a "clean slate"?

This is a 6x12 V-nose. So far, there is 1/2" of polyiso on all sides with the 1/2" plywood replaced. The roof has the same, covered with 1/8" wood panels. There is a small thermal break there (about 1/4"), but none in the walls. No coating on the roof, though it is silver in color. I will be installing an AC before I decide on painting, but I don't want it to run constantly. I'm in central Texas, so it's pretty hot. I have not put any insulation in the flooring. I'm considering carpet padding and indoor/outdoor carpet.

It occurs to me now that I could do the roof first and see how much it improves the situation before committing to ruining the side paint job....

I painted my trailer white rustoleum. I then painted the roof with high quality white elastomeric roof coating. Man oh man is that stuff white! My trailer stays very cool. You can touch the roof in full sun but the black frame will burn your hand.

Think about using a high bond primer before the roof coating. My coating is solvent based so I feel it has a good bond to the rustoleum.

Craig,

I'm just north of you..... You may be able to get more than 1/2" insulation in the walls. I put 3/4" closed-cell foam in the walls, put the 3/8" plywood back on, then ran vertical 1x4's at the metal uprights, than put another layer of 3/4" of closed cell foam, then covered with another layer of 3/8" plywood. The ceiling has ~ 2" of closed-cell foam in it.

My build is here...... http://tnttt.com/gallery/search.php?user_id=8447&display=popup

Let me know if I can help any.....

@otctc - How much should I charge for those 6-foot pizzas? :)

@wtcreaux - Wow! That 's a lot of insulation. Unfortunately, I've done a lot more work and I'm not ready to rip out everything to redo the walls.

I think I'll do something like Tom did. Thanks for the ideas. I'll let you know how it goes.

I did my 7x14 Black V-nose roof in the coating and it made a "H3LL" of a difference!
