Getting mail forwarded for extended trips

Postby kVox42 » Sun Sep 20, 2015 8:37 pm

I'm going to be on the road for a few months and I'm wondering if any long-term road warriors have a system they'd suggest to get your mail forwarded to you at various pickup points along the journey?

Doesn't Good Sam club offer a mail forwarding service for members?

Last spring, our postal office decided not to deliver mail down our private (paved) road – after 20 years of doing so. That lasted about 2 weeks and now they’re delivering again, However, during that time; I decided to move all of my important mail online. All we get is junk mail now. I have always been a little suspicious of online accounts, but it probably isn’t any riskier that having a bank statement sitting in a mailbox on a quiet country road. This may not be a solution for your present road trip, but you might consider it for future trips.

Here’s the usps option: https://www.usps.com/manage/forward.htm

When we go on long duration trips, our neighbor picks up all of our mail. If it is only a week or two, then they just keep it. If it is going to be a month or so, then we will contact them when we know we are going to be somewhere for more than a few days, several days in advance. We prebuy the postage on flat rate priority mail boxes and have them send them to us at a "General Delivery" address of where we will be. We try to use small towns that only have a single post office. As an example, address might be

Dave and Regina
c/o General Delivery
Cody, Wyoming XXXXX

The post offices will normally hold GD mail for up to 2 weeks.

We do the same for them when they go on trips.

I am a letter carrier There is a KOA on my route. It has probably 150 spaces. I deliver a lot of mail there. But no change of address are accepted out of there. They go through it and mail for people not there anymore gets returned.
