New guy from Texas

Postby skeetersmobilelodge » Tue Sep 22, 2015 11:44 am

So let me first start off by saying hello and introducing myself. My name is Skeeter from Wylie, Tx. I'm an 8 year Army infantry veteran who spent more than a fair amount of time overseas. I'm a married man with a wonderful family including a fantastic son who seems to make himself a lot of adopted grandparents everywhere he goes, an amazingly loving and supportive wife who has stood by my side even with thousands of miles between us. Over the years we have acquired a used, then new pop up camper that has led us to several pop up camper rallies where we have met many wonderful friends. Now here comes the good part.....

Through these rallies one couple in particular have been amazing friends, close family if you will, constantly kidnapping my son for fun activities or just plain hanging out. If my kid goes missing, I always know where to find him. TxBum, a member here as well as on the pop up portal forum, and his wife are absolutely awesome people. Through conversations over the years they have found out my lifestyle of hunting and fishing to provide my family with meat for the year that is healthy, nutritious, and cheap. They also know that I hunt alone, giving myself time to calm down and get my mind back to reality for what little time I can after my time in the war. Being outdoors gives me inner peace, time to enjoy and get to experience things in life that others never even knew existed. TxBum had, unbeknownst to me, began planning his very own wonderful thing to do for me and my family. He and his wife began to build a teardrop camper, a "foamie hybrid" as I understand you folks call it. They spent their time, effort, hard earned money, building a teardrop trailer to give me for nothing in return. In TxBums words this was his own version of the Wounded Warrior Project, being a veteran himself he wanted to do something to give back to a fellow veteran. You see each year I hunt I either sleep on an air mattress in the back of my truck, or in a tent. This tends to get quite interesting when it's 20 degrees outside. TxBum wanted to do something about it and has given me what I've dubbed as my "mobile lodge", my son has laid claim naming the teardrop "the no daddy's allowed club" with my wife going along with my son's name lol!

With nothing more than a few hand shakes, many thank yous, and lots of hugs, TxBum watched his creation be towed off in a northern direction to find its forever home. She still needed a little work when I got home so I spent the next couple of weeks setting the rear hatch in place, making a main door seal, adding a front platform for gear, installing some rear stabilizers, doing a little painting, installing a battery, LED lights, air conditioner, a little wiring, finding a home for a spare tire and mounting bracket, installing a custom handle for the rear hatch, and lots of other little things that I'm sure you folks know all about.

An enormous thank you to TxBum and his wife, as we could never thank them enough for what they've done for me and my family. They will always be wonderful people, always welcome in my home, and will always remain great friends of ours. I'm gonna owe them a lot of deer meat! Lol!!!

Here are a few photos of the finished project, she's all ready to go hunting!

Edit: Apparently most of my pictures have been chopped in half, if you click the pics you will be forwarded to the entire photo :)

Welcome to the group, and thank you for your service. You just joined the nicest collection of people you can find. Congrats on the new trailer and a big "way to go" TexBum. That is one incredibly kind thing to do. Have fun with the new trailer, and try to join in a few local gatherings and meet some other Teardroppers!

Way to go skeeter. Your mods look great. I salute all military veterans that served during peace time and times of conflict. We as a family support all our troops, both active and reserves. Thank you TNTTT.COM for giving me the chance to learn from this website and the skills needed to build skeeter's teardrop. Richard aka Txbum

Welcome, Love the tear! Make a run or two, we've met some wonderful people here! Our first meet, everyone so nice, hand shaking....later around the fire someone asked. " so Dave what made ya go to the middle of the woods, spend the night around total strangers, that you met on line?" I was hooked then! Come on in, the waters just fine! Coyote

Welcome Skeeter, and again, thank you for your service. As a combat vet myself I can completely understand what you said about getting out in the woods to get your head right. That is probably the biggest reason I started my own TD, I am just getting too damn old to sleep in the dirt, lol. You have been given a wonderful gift there, and also done a great job finishing it out. I hope that trailer serves you as well as you have served our country.

And to Richard, thank you sir for standing up for our veterans and for doing such a wonderful thing for Skeeter.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it is for OUR Veterans that mean so much to this country and the free world. America's veterans have always answered the call , it is now our time to answer the Veteran's call. Please support you local VFW , American Legion Posts,, WWP (Wounded Warrior Project), their functions and fund raisers. I also wish to thank all Veterans on this forum for their great service to this country that the world envies. Sincerely ,Txbum

Thank you everyone for the kind replies. The mobile lodge is an ongoing project, lately I've swapped the battery and the battery install for something a little different. Added a few minor things such as a simple set up to hold the door open, a small rubber piece to keep the door latch from rubbing the inside wood, of course some minor creature comforts like pillows

Anywho here is a pic of my hunting camp after some work with a chainsaw (and of course a well deserved nap in the lodge!).
