Sweet Little Standy: Terrapin by Casual Turtle

Postby JuneBug » Fri Sep 19, 2014 9:40 am

A relative sent me a link to the Terrapin (a small standy) built on a 5 x 8 trailer base. Simple, relatively light and a nice use of space. The company is called Casual Turtle.

It would not be hard to replicate this (or something similar) as a DIY project. Or just give Casual Turtle a call.

Yes, it is a nicely thought out use of a tiny space and utilization of local materials.

It is a nice design inside, and doesn't look too bad outside, until the sloppy cheap sheet metal around the bottom catches your eye...
I like the roof with the compound curves, it gives it a bit of character!

I like it, not the price, but the overall first impression. I am partial to wood tone interiors, especially after living in a fake post and beam home for 15 years.

I especially like the Beetle kill blue-stain pine flooring. I have never heard of it before and find that it is from pine trees destroyed by the pine beetle. Great use of a otherwise wasted product. I will keep my eyes out and see if I can economically find it here in the east.

Yes, I was surprised that they didn't use diamond plate, which would give a much better impression.

My only issue is the window toward the front of the trailer. Unless there is a hard cover for the opening while traveling I think it might open itself to road hazards like stones or other material kicked up from the tow car or even something in front of the tow car. The aluminum, in my opinion, needs to be painted.

Painting the aluminum would help, but it looks like they built a very pretty wood box, and plopped it onto some trailer they found, it makes the package look like it wasn't well thought out.
Maybe it is just me, and others find the contrast appealing (?)
It could be that that is the point; to make it look like a cool wooden box, separate from the trailer platform.
Has anyone contacted the company, or have any thoughts on why they would have built it that way?

It looks like they are designed to fit in the back of a pickup - but with an option to mount on a trailer frame.

Wrinkle finish black paint might salvage the appearance!

I would love to see more interior pics. of the cab over camper, I think I like that more than the trailer!

Diamond plate aluminum for the tool box and maybe satin black powder coat for the lower sides and tail.
I am sure the would use safety glass on the front window.

So...kind of resurrecting an old thread (sorry!), but I really like the simplicity of this trailer, and I'm considering building a similar one for a mobile jewelry/leatherworking workshop. It appears as if they do a lot of them as a single-wall construction with the wall studs and roof beams exposed inside, and the backside of the cedar exterior being the interior wall. Taking that into consideration, what side studs should be used for a build similar to this? Just eyeballing it in the photos it looks like 2x3? What should the spacing be on the studs? Also, for the curved roof beams, I can't tell if they're laminating them to get that shape, or if they are perhaps steam-bending them. And...what thickness of cedar siding would make the box strong without being overbuilt?

Anyone have any insight into these questions? Thanks in advance!

This reply goes back to some of the old posts. Apparently the build, or at one point had built, a version without that gawd awful metal around the bottom. Looks so much better with wood.

Yeah, the wood is much nicer. I think the one with the metal around the bottom may have been a slide-in on a box trailer or something. I love the look of the cedar plank siding. It's pretty and I wish I could get a look inside one to see the dimensions of the framing they used, and if they've laminated the curved roof beams or just bent them.
