1947 KIT stolen in California

Postby S. Heisley » Thu Oct 15, 2015 8:17 pm

Copied from facebook:
What a lousy break ... this guy's '47 Kit teardrop was stolen from in front of his house - attached to his rig & packed to go on a trip! Please share .... although the statistics I hear are NOT good ... apparently about 80% of stolen cars are found, but roughly 80% of stolen trailers are NOT .... and this one is small enough to hide in a garage or small building.
Keep an eye out .... Good luck to James Osgood in California!

"My trailer was stolen last night if you see it let me know and the police there aren't that many 1947 kits out there. I'm so sad, I was leaving on a camping trip.

I believe, Burbank, CA. But, the trailer could be anywhere by now, North, South, East, or West....even Mexico.

Just please watch for it. It could be hidden in a barn or in a garage and may be brought out tomorrow, in a week, or a month.
It may even show up for sale on the Internet.

It's the usual: See something; Say something ...and watch for it.

What a Sh...y deal!
But, that would make me think about moving to a better neighbourhood.

Brian, I have lived in Burbank and there aren't a lot of bad people living there....They can't afford to (It's pricey). However, down here, in the lower 48, the bad guys troll neighborhoods in other towns, looking for opportunities. A vehicle can be taken in a matter of minutes, with no one the wiser; and, if it is all set up and ready to go with a trailer in tow, so much the better. They get two or more things in the time it takes to steal one. It is up to the owner to protect what he owns.

I remember one time, when I was moving with a UHaul. I had a movers' truck with a trailer unit, my car on that, attached. My helpers had long since said their good-byes and I was loading the last thing at midnight. Parked in front of my house, I locked everything up and decided to go inside for a quick nap on the living room couch (I was leaving that for the new owners), before I left for the long trudge to my new home. A half hour later, I awoke when a van pulled up and idled behind my tow set-up. I switched on the porch light and saw someone sneak back to the van and quietly leave. I went out to check on everything; and, that person had already gotten the truck's door open, ready to work on the starter. Had I been sleeping in the bedroom, I would not have seen nor heard anything, as would none of my neighbors, and all would have been lost. (Most newer homes are made with the bedrooms in the back, buffered from street noise.) Needless to say, I wasn't sleepy anymore. I pulled out within minutes and pulled off for quick naps at truck stops along the way, with no more incidents.

This is one of the reasons why I ready everything that needs to be packed inside the house and pack and hitch the trailer at the last minute. When I get back from a trip, I have my trailer unhitched and put away by nightfall. A person may live in a perfectly good neighborhood; but, there are people from other towns who make their living by trolling for things to steal and those people will drive an hour or better, working many different cities and neighborhoods at different times so that they won't get caught.

I remember back to when my dad passed away. The obituary was in the newspaper, with the funeral time posted. My parents had been living in a small town, an hour or so from Cleveland, Ohio. Still, thieves from Cleveland read the newspapers and made the trek to my parents' home while the funeral was happening. Fortunately, my mom had a friend, stationed on the porch, with a shotgun in hand, because thieving during a funeral is a common occurrence these days. One just can't be too careful. Discounting all the people with drug problems, there aren't enough good jobs to go around and thieving can be a very lucrative profession. Thieves now troll the Internet and plan their thieving trips very carefully. Anyone in any place could be next, even up there in Canada!

...But for the Grace of God go I.

I saw this post on FB. It completely sucks. I shared it with my friends and family in So. Cal and asked them to share as well. I so hate punk ass thugs like this.

I hope they find it in good shape.

My trailer is so comfortable, that I sleep in it at home some times. I think I will make it a practice to sleep in the trailer if parked in front of my home.
There are 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Regrettably thieves are everywhere these days , just like Predators in a Jungle , you must be very careful to not present an opportunity ... as they Always go for the "low hanging fruit” or the “slowest animal” ... or an unguarded teardrop trailer ...

That is a sad story Cindy. Not in the tears sort of sad, but in the pitiful sort of sad. As a country, we have migrated to this sad state and it is one reason I subscribe to Java Jack's security strategy. I myself am lucky as to where I live with little to no crime, but I do worry about what it is like out there on the streets or in the forests when I am not around. I have a middle aged neighbor lady with children who lives for posting on Facebook, including every trip she and her family takes, before and during her/their absence.
She is extremely lucky no one has targeted her yet. And she blows off all cautions I give her about this practice. Sort of like having the attitude, "I am invincible" that I see in many of our younger (at least younger then me and not victims yet) crowd.

Yes, Social Media sucks for that reason.
I too have been warned by other Forum users and personal TD friends here, about posting too much personal information.
But, on one hand I trust in people maybe too much, and also feel that the people visiting this Forum are the same wonderful people we have met so far in our journey into the Teardrop World.
I sincerely hope one of us will be the hero that sees and reports the most recent Camping package that was stolen in Burbank Ca.

Really sorry to read about another stolen trailer! :( :x

I couldn't agree more GPW. People literally laugh out loud in my face when they see I use a "Club" on my steering wheel. I know they aren't fool proof but as you said it "lessens the opportunity" which could make a crucial difference in losing both my car or car and trailer if it's hitched up.

Sharon that is awful that people need to protect their homes during funerals. Seriously, what is our world coming to? Is nothing sacred?

I would have to go with nope, nothing is off limits to thieves anymore. It's all opportunity to them

Watch Craigslist.

They will not take anything but cash..... if it says first person with cash get's it. I would question it.

Except on Craigslist, asking for cash doesn't mean the item is stolen. If anyone on Craigslist is taking anything other than cash for what they sell, they're not very bright. That said, I agree that it's a good place to watch for a stolen trailer.

Thefts while Funeral in session.
Looks like that show 'BAIT CAR' has a new menu for thieves, 'BAIT HOUSE'.
.. .. .. hummmm, sounds fishy.
Is it possible, FULL RV in a 48 Sq.Ft. footprint & stay under 500Lbs wet?
SHE thinks teardrops are "cute" but I prefer a SKOSH mo-room & at 65+ the
body doesn't react/extract/move/mend/bend/lend or work like it use'ta.
NOW! Those unwanted guests moving in, Mr. 'Arther I. Tus' & Ms. DVT (grrr)
