Progressive Dynamics vs WFCO

Postby SaltCreek » Tue Oct 20, 2015 8:31 pm

Suggestions?? I've seen a bunch of pd4045. Just curious if many have tried the WFCO brand? Or if that is why I don't see them

WAFCO has a very negative reputation, do a search for WAFCO problems. PD is based in Michigan and very responsive to problems.

I have two PD u it's and zero problems for a few years now. One of the best items I did as I can quick charge my batteries without overcooking them

Thats good enough for me. What's different about the "kv" version of the 4045?

I had a WFCO. It quit working on one trip, still in warranty. I had it repaired by the service center in Dayton OH. It took over 3 weeks. I reinstalled it, tested OK. Went camping, it failed again. They denied warranty service for the 2nd claim.

I bought a PD4045.

End of story.

I know this will not help, but I have had a WFCO in all three of my trailers. No problems with any of them. The oldest is from 2007 and still works fine. But with all the negative reports on them, I may switch over to PD. on the next one.

Similar experience for my one teardrop. No problems with the WFCO since 2010 but will probably switch to PD if I build a TTT or CTC.

Ditto x 3.

I think the quality has improved while the bad rep hasn't diminished. In fact a lot of the comments I reviewed before I purchased mine three years ago were second hand, people saying they heard they were crap rather than recent actual user experience. Of course that does not mean every one of the WFCO units will be trouble free.

I installed a WFCO last year in my CTC. I run a 13500 BTU AC, counter height refrigerator, microwave, several led lights. Obviously not at the same time but have not experienced any problems.

I know it isn't one of the options on your list but I have been extremely happy with the Tripp Lite APS1250 since it provides both charging and an inverter. It has been 100% reliable, charges easily, and provides 120v AC if I need it. The really nice part is the automatic 120v pass through so the outlets work off of shore power but automatically switch to battery when shore is unplugged or turn off if I want to save power and go DC only.

My first WFCO went belly up rather quickly. My second one seems to be doing fine. I read all the negative stuff and it made me think I had a problem with my second one; when, in reality, it was because because the campground had the power turned off. Phew! Dogged a bullet on that one! :phew: Whatever the problem was with WFCO, they seemed to have solved it. I haven't had a problem in three years (...knock on wood) nor have I heard of a problem in quite a while. Still, if I were to build again, I would think seriously about using a Progressive Dynamic simply because they are made in the USA.

I have had a WFCO 8745 running continuously since the Fall of 2012 with absolutely no problems. Temperatures have ranged from below -15 to above 120 F without a hitch. I think that it is possible that WFCO has some QC problems in the past but have improved. That said, I am not an acolyte for anyone. My friend's trailer has PD and we were troubleshooting why the battery only charged to 7 VDC. Turns out that is what the charger unit was putting out, so it looks like one side of the rectifier is open.

Does this mean WFCO good, PD bad, I don't think so. Anecdotes, no matter how heart-rending, are not data. How many WFCO are sold compared to PD? When the RV market went into the toilet, I saw far more WFCO units for sale, hadn't even heard of PD, telling me that many of the manufacturers were installing WFCO. (of course, that may be why they were going out of business) As for the frequent comments about China vs. America, ipads and iphones are both made in China, what about their quality control? Where do almost all of the components used come from?

I know, not much clarification for your question, just my two cents.
