Buying USED, what to look for?

Postby levi333 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 11:15 am

Hi, I'm new to the forum, native Oregonian, looking to purchase a teardrop to start exploring the state and beyond after the fiance and I get married in January.
Currently looking for a basic model, sub $4000 as I don't want to spend a bunch and discover we don't like camping this way.

Options appear to be mostly custom/home builds (which I'm not totally opposed to) and 10yr old Little Guys for the most part. What sorts of things should I be looking for? Leaks is obviously a big one, especially in Oregon. Rot, rust, mold, as well, but looking for any tips on how to do a thorough inspection.

Thanks for advice!

In addition to what you mentioned...
Find out what they used for construction materials for walls, cabinets, countertops and then look for wood splitting or swelling in the galley area.
If trailer has sink/water storage, check plumbing for leaks, check pump.
Check the lights both tail/brake/blinkers, running lights as well as any interior and galley lights.
Check tire wear and look for any uneven tread wear
Check the hitch and make sure it does not stick and proper latches
Check the tongue jack to ensure it goes up/down without issue
If it has a stove, check it for proper operation
Doubtful that they would put trailer brakes on but if so, check them to make sure they are working and/or not grinding
Check the wheel bearings and make sure they are not grinding or overheating, etc.

That should give you a pretty good check list. However, if you are not sure this type of camping is for you, I would start by renting one for a weekend trip first.

You might want to rent first, teardrops are not for everyone and there are a lot of variations on a theme.
I would also attend a TearJerker's gathering.

Thanks for the advice. I was wanting to rent first, but surprisingly can't find anything in Oregon!
I figure if I get a good enough deal I can always flip it and not lose much.

My thought is now is a good time to buy, people not wanting to store them, that sort of thing and prices probably go up in the spring when people start camping again.

If you like the outdoors and camping...... you are going to LOVE Teardrop camping. :applause:
Oh, and you have to like people too! As Tear Drop trailers attract a lot of attention.
As you will be newly married and not camping alone. You will want to add two more "MUSTS" to your search list.
1. 5' wide
2. Two doors
There are lots of great "Gatherings" and Organizations here in the Pacific North West.
Stay plugged in!
Oh speaking of plugged in  you may also want to add power to you search list
3. Make sure you get a TD with a "Converter" so that you can enjoy the wonder of "Shoreline" power while camping where it is available.
W look forward to meeting you down the road somewhere in the upcoming seasons.

To test one out by renting you could make an 8 hour drive and pick one up here in Sacramento, CA: http://www.happycamperteardroprentals.com/

I have no personal experience with this company, only know about them from seeing them online. Still, seems like it's within reach if renting first is worth the drive

take a screwdriver with you and pull out a screw such as one used on a marker light. If it's rusty, walk away.

If it is how small they are make a cardboard mock up in the living room with some wine cheeses ...... that give you a feel
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN,
YET AT THE SAME TIME, THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE,,, SO MAKE THE BEST OF IT WHILE YOU CAN, AND ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS
