TV in a camper

Postby vitya-velik » Wed Oct 28, 2015 1:21 am

Can I. change the cord of the tv to a 12v and use it in my camper?

How do people in RV's have it? Do I need a special 12V tv or can I use just a regular one?

For 12v , you need a 12V TV.... For a regular TV , you need a long extension cord ... and 120V ... ;)

Walmart's 19" tv has a wall wart that puts out 12V so you can cut and splice.

I bring my old 17" laptop running Linux. I have the Avermedia USB TV tuner card for over-the-air signals, but primarily use the laptop over the internet to watch shows if the weather is crappy outside. We have the old, grandfathered Verizon unlimited plan, so we pretty much have broadband internet in about 90% of the places we go. I use the PDANet+ (with FoxFi) as a wifi hotspot if wanted or Easytether as a direct tether app between the phone and computer. I use them both, as PDANet doesn't do a direct tether to Linux and Easytether doesn't do wifi. I can charge the 19v laptop battery or run it from either shore power or my inverter.

Amazon has a few reasonably priced 12v/110v TV DVD player combos intended for camper use

http://www.amazon.com/Axess-19-Inch-Pla ... B00G6K7OX4
http://www.amazon.com/RCA-DECG13DR-13-3 ... B00HS9CIFG

No affiliation with any of those, just what I found when I looked for it when I thought I wanted a TV in the camper (changed my mind on that later, use a small tablet for movies before bed with them copied locally)
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Does anyone even use DVDs anymore? I haven't for at least ten years...anything I want, I stream them from Netflix or Amazon or buy them digitally and download onto an SSD drive the size of a pack of cards. Hundreds of movies, virtually in the palm of my hand. I can't imagine lugging around that many DVDs, especially in a small trailer. Same for books. With the exception of perhaps a dozen out of print books I own that have never been digitized, I have an entire library in my Kindle. Modern technology, hurray!

Yes. I use DVDs. But I'm about 15 years behind technology.

I use dvd's and a flip phone. I don't take Internet access with me. I have a cheap dvd/t.v. I take with me.

I use a cheap windows tablet, 32GB Sim and movies in mp4 format. I can take 20+ high quality movies and watch them on either my phone or the tablet.

We put a TV and DVD player in the midget when we built it. Last year they were pulled out in favor of some more storage cubbies since we use our laptop now instead. We record tv shows before we leave on a trip and watch them on the laptop. Mostly old stuff like 1960's or 70's shows. Our new Benroy Woody won't even have TV hook ups. It's amazing how technology has changed.

I can tell you what I'm doing. Samsung Galaxy tab 4.

Load that guy up with hulu, netflix, prime video and all my DVDs that I've compressed with handbrake.

With an otg cable I can play all my video games using an Xbox 360 gamepad.

Plugs right into the dc outlet using a special cable.

All this on a ten inch screen for 270 bucks.

Myuh. That's the way to go.

We're in the same boat on movies, I have them on the file server at home, the kids can watch em on their kindles, or an android HDMI stick we have on the TVs.

When we travel, I copy a few locally to either my windows tablet, or the kindles and head out the door.

I have a 64gb card on the tablet, and I average about 700MB for a normal 720p movie. Nearly 90 movies will fit on that sd card (micro sd in an adapter) smaller than the size of my finger nail...

yeah for technology!

Amazon has a number of 12V TVs available. Someone posted links earlier.

We have one in our trailer.

I also have a portable HDD that I have a backup copy of all my movies on. This combined with a Roku player is a great, compact way to bring movies with you.

I also have a pico projector that I use for outdoor movie nights while camping. I keep a Sony X33 Bluetooth speaker for the outdoor movie nights as well.

I posted about both these on my blog.
