Class action against the VA

That is what I thought. So all this about a big sue fest is probably not going to happen. I think they are working on this to fix it. Oh yeah Ira that was nobel of you. Wish you would have gotten mine before me. Lots of headaches could have been avoided. But wish I would have been smart enough not to have volunteered. But then again I loved the time also. Anyway I think this will be an issue that will be resolved with out to much crap.

I know nobody wants to hear this but I'll say it anyway. Granted the guy that took the info home on his laptop was an idiot but the moron that advertised what was on the laptop that was stolen was the real a-hole. The most likely thing that would have happened was that who-ever stole it would pawn it and it would wind up getting re-formatted or the harddrive replaced and sold to someone with no one being the wiser as to what was ever on it. (odds are that's what happened anyway)It's not always a bright idea to broadcast what was stolen, what ever happened to being sneaky and tight lipped?

It won't be hard to tell if someone tries to use my identity, in fact I'll be glad to redirect all my calls to them, then they'll find out how bad they screwed up.

Cecil, I read somewhere that the U.S. has half of all the lawyers in the world (or some ridiculously high figure anyway). They have to win enough lawsuits to earn their $500K salaries, and buy their Mercedes and Porsches. This country has gone "LAWSUIT CRAZY".

That's a double-edged sword!! I agree that it was not good to tell the thief what he had stolen, but the information needed to get to the Vets to allow them to be extra alert and watch out for ID theft. Also, don't forget that the information was not made public for about a week after the actual theft and that may just have saved the information. It allowed time for the theif to reformat the HD (hopefully) before he realized what he had. At least we can all hope that is the case.

I think the starting point was around 1975. Probably the worst of it is the currently active military personnel that were included with the data theft. I got my letter today too.

I got the letter and it seems very generic. PRICS sent me no help what so ever. OF course they can't devoulge to much info. I know this is not the end of the story so maybe we can chat about it some more when something GOOD or BAD happens. Let's all hope for the best and the reform of this kind of threat.

I agree, there really is no good way to handle it, I just believe that a little less advertisement for a couple of weeks might have been prudent. I have no way of knowing if what I said woulda, coulda or did happen but we can hope, eh.
I also agree that we needed to be notified so either way it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

Got my letter the other day, all we can really do is hope for the best.

Got my letter Monday (away from home). Read it while the news was talking about the recovery of the laptop.

Don't think I trust that whole "no harm done" announcement. Must've been a hell of a liability somewhere for the VA/Gov't that we DIDN'T hear about.
