Teardrop Crawls

Postby Vedette » Sat Oct 31, 2015 11:24 pm

Well it is time!
3 1/2 years ago we were working feverously to finish Miss Piggy for a huge bucket list vacation. When the vacation days started to evaporate we decide to give up and put the tent in the back of the truck and go!
While on our trip we happened upon a Tear Jerkers Crawl across the Upper Michigan. Karl and his group welcomed us with open arms and explained what there 'Crawl" was all about. We were hooked!
From that day on, my mind was working on the eventuality of organizing a similar event for the PNW.
But remember... we had never even camped in a Teardrop yet??
After attending many "Gatherings" over the past 3 years! And meeting some wonderful new people!!!
A PNW Crawl finally came to fruition with the introduction of the "Fall Crawl"
IT WAS AN AMAZING SUCCESS ON EVERY LEVEL!
So much so, that we are planning to continue the "Fall Crawl' as an annual event for the PNW & B.C Chapters of the Tear Jerkers! 8)

This brings me to the reason for this post!
Gatherings are fun (we have been to lots over the past 3 seasons and hosted two!) but "Crawls" seem to be tailor made for Teardrop Travelling/Camping or via versa. :applause: :applause:
If you have not tried it yet ....you should. And if you would like to plan one, you will be highly rewarded for your efforts!
Crawls are our Future!
Good Roads

PS
If you are reading this and thinking of organizing a Crawl......Please PM me! I would love to share what we learned from our first or sign up for yours? :wine:

Brian, I saw the post about the decline in larger gatherings & a general lack of interest in them, compared to previous years. My first exposure to teardrops was only last fall, a gathering of the Arizona Tearjerkers in September. It was up in Flagstaff, which seemed like heaven compared to the months on end without any cool weather in Tucson that summer. I used it to get out of the heat for a few days and scratch an itch about teardrops. It wasn't a large gathering, perhaps 10 or 15 small trailers at the campground, but it was an interesting group of people from differing backgrounds.

There was a larger gathering closer to home in October last year & my wife was completely taken with the people we met (she hadn't gone to Flagstaff, working that weekend), the different approach to camping people had & the general camaraderie & hospitality shown by everyone. This one had about 50 campers in one area, a much bigger group of people. Both had good people, good conversations & interesting trailers to look at & talk about. It's a good way to get an introduction to camping in small trailers.

To me a crawl makes a lot of sense. While a gathering is fun, a crawl has a lot more to offer in general, since it's a changing scene with each stop & different sights & points of interest along the way. I missed the Arizona "Route 66 crawl" earlier this year in May, since the trailer wasn't near enough completion to move under its own power. Next year I'm looking forward to doing a bit of travelling & hope to do a visit at the Farm gathering in the fall. A crawl in your area sounds really interesting to me, as I've never had a chance to see your part of the country. I just like the idea of a crawl.

I guess the biggest decision to make would be, is it better to have the crawl first & then meet at the Farm, or do the Farm first & then the crawl afterwards? That's a tough one!

Hey Brian - I built my TD for the express purpose of being able to set out on a loosely planned adventure with only a vague idea of my destinations or agenda, but would always have my overnight accommodations within sight through the rear view mirror. I have discovered many great campgrounds and terrific destinations with this practice.

The crawl that you describe sounds like my kind of gathering. Can you tell us more about a typical itinerary or point us to a source of information on the Upper Michigan or Route 66 crawls? How long is a typical crawl and is it a series of one night or multiple night stays?

It's a long way from Atlanta, but I would love to make the trip up to the PNW if you decide to put one together.

So, exactly what is the "crawl" part?

When I went to my first VW bus campout, I was invited on the carabus . Just a bunch of old buses cruising down the Blue Ridge Parkway. My first thought was "how sophomore-ish". But, I went and DANG!! It was fun. Looking in the rear view mirror and seeing a line of cars you, for some reason, love. Getting lots of waves and thumbs up from on coming drivers.

Some good Questions have been raised here!
I will attempt to answer each of them as best I can.
Remember there is no mold here....and a Crawl can be as varied as the countryside that it's route takes it.
Heck, on our Crawl we went on an unexpected, unplanned Pontoon boat ride thru three small lakes at sunset.
I think the best way to describe a "Crawl" is "A slow moving Gathering with a number of pre set destinations".
Our Fall Crawl was 10 days long, with 9 nights at 7 different locations (Campgrounds) with each night and each campground being completely different. We stayed a City Fairground, a Wilderness State park, a Private Commercial Campground, a downtown State Park, a Forestry Campground, a Fishing Lodge , and a Church Field. Some had power and nice washrooms, some had pit toilets.
Some we had reservations others we just showed up (it was the middle of September and the SP s do not take reservations past the 15th). We started at a trailer event and ended at Car Show/ Trailer event.
Some we paid individually, some we had negotiated a flat fee (that we divided equally by the number of trailers we had staying that night) and one was free.
Some nights we cooked on our own, some nights we took in a restaurant as a group, some nights we had a group pot luck....all of which were decided by the participants at the beginning of each day.
We did not Caravan (even though there was times where small groups did form along the way). And some times a few left the campground as a group.
We had no set departure or arrival times to and from destination points.
Stops along the way were impromptu, but we did provide everyone with a "information bag' filled with tourism pamphlets and brochures, outlining what hey might have opportunity to take in along the way.
There was no "Registration Fee" as there was very little out of pocket expenses by the Organizers.
We did have a "Registration List" and included it in the information bag with the participant contact information & Cell # (in case of emergencies and for those that might want to contact their new friends in the future).
The route we picked was very scenic and the daily travel distance were kept short. Total Crawl miles were in the neighbour hood of 500 miles. The longest day may have been 120 miles.....shortest was 56 miles (Ted would know for sure). miles don't really matter to us?? ;)
We had 14 Registered Teardrops (20 people & 3 well behaved dogs!), with 13 trailers being the largest number on any one night (two nights) and 8 that attended all 9 nights.(last night being the smallest night, 10 was our second smallest night)
There were No incidents, No disagreements, No real drama, and most of all No Complaints! The weather and roads were Great!
100 % of our 2015 participants said they want attend again in 2016!
Participant suggestion for our next crawl:
1. That we move it ahead one week (mostly because of participant availability and temperature) thus we will start on the first week after Labour Day once the kids are back in school.
2. That we have more 2 night stays (the old Travellers vs Campers difference) this would also allow participants to explore the attractions that each area has to offer. Also will inspire more "Group Breakfasts and Pot Luck dinners.
3. That we alternate sponsorship between the B.C. and the PNW Chapters of the Tear Jerkers, with an entirely different route each year! (My personal suggestion)
4. A Canadian loop between the Monashee Mt. Range and the Rocky Mt. Range, starting and ending in the USA. for 2016.
* might be changed to "Start" at our Farm Gathering in B.C. and end at a USA Gathering.
2016 could be 11 nights to 18 nights.
And the last question to be answered ......is that as Hosts of the "Farm Gathering" we have to be home at least a week prior to the event to get the grounds prepped and welcome those who arrive early. Thus it can only be a starting point as opposed to and ending destination.
Hope this helps to clarify and inspire! :wine:

That sounds very intriguing. If a group from the East Coast were to have a Crawl, we would seriously consider joining it.

Thanks Ted....I was just too lazy to do the math.
And I know you know all of the mile marks on hwy 20 and usually keep track of your mileage.
We did 4300 kms on that trip, but we had to get to Lynden, and we carried on to southern Oregon before attending the Fall Brigade in Mulino.Or.

We had a great time on Karl Nordstrom's crawl across the U.P. Of Michigan a few years back. I've often thought that it would be fun to have a multi-state one from the St Croix down the Mississippi River to the gulf. The great thing about a crawl is that people can join at any leg. I'm sure it took a lot of organization, but it went great.

Hi Pat
Have not seen you on the Forum for a while??
Yes, we wish we would have had another couple of days to stay with you guys on Karl's Crawl, but we had to get on the pedal just to get home in time for Sandi to go back to work.
Not a problem any more.
Your southward crawl sounds great.......but you should get a group from your side of the Great Lakes to crawl westward to meet us in Montana or Wyoming in 2017.
Food for thought! ;)
