Travel To Cape Hatteras

Postby lrrowe » Sun Nov 01, 2015 11:35 am

Last week my wife and I shared a house with another couple at Cape Hatteras for a week of fishing, sightseeing and other things that women like to see (means gift shops and local eateries). We did not use our camper for this trip, but I wanted to share the trip as a destination for others to consider. This area consists of Kitty Hawk, Nags Head and Hatteras Island. We stayed on Hatteras Island at Frisco, just south of the Hatteras (Cape Point) lighthouse.

Next spring I plan on going back with our CT. There is an off the grid campground run by the Nation Park Service and several private campgrounds for us to consider.

The appeal to us is driving on the beaches with our 4x4's and rod racks with all our fishing poles and just hanging around fishing, watching the surf and sea birds.

The weather did not cooperate with us with high winds which was difficult to cast in and also the fish went on vacation. I caught only one small Snapper Bluefish (12") but that was ok given my bad thumb that I tried to cut off the week before.

One needs to be aware of beach closing periods during shore bird and sea turtle mating seasons.

Hatteras Lighthouse. Moved mile or more inland several years ago because of beach erosion at original site.

Some ramps were closed bc of water levels from the most recent hurricanes. We were able to drive through this one.

Cape Point at low tide. Notice sand formation out aways making an island for Pelicans

Typical scene around anglers when the fish are not biting. Now where are the Coors?

Frisco Pier damaged from hurricane from 2003 I believe. Cannot remember the storm name. I hear they are waiting to tear it down.

Comurant drying it's wings out.

Nothing like a little champagne at the end of the week.

If you are in Buxton, NC, you must stop at the Apple Blossom and treat yourself to an Apple Ugly. And bring some home too. But go early as they go fast.

And here we end up our week with a short walk on the beach at Cape Point.

Not only is their disappearance is a a crying shame, but the Federal Government's restricting access to "our" natural outdoor resources" is another crime. It is a constant battle to keep access to the beaches open. Between the NPS's actions and special interest groups, places to "go" are getting smaller every year.

Bob, looking good out there. Have you seen on TNTTT about some of us getting a place, (10-14 rooms) sometime next year, it is on the Chesapeake chapter site? Sounds promising for us. Get healthier, my back is doing great.

No Bob, I have not seen it. Can you better direct me to the link if there is one?
My back is miserable. I see a UVA surgeon in two weeks. I am going to push for a fusion as I am seriously hindered right now. But it is hard to convince others of it since I am committed to going to my annual hunt camp next week in my CT. I am doing what I can to have it ready by then. I test connected a thermostat on my water tank heater yesterday and it is working great. The only mistake is that I ordered in error one in Centigrade rather then Fahrenheit. I made a conversion chart for now. I will order a correct one and put the C one up on eBay.
