My wife wanted/wants a big trailer with all the home amenities. She is disabled (though don't tell her I said that!), and has a tough time climbing up two or three steps to access the normal trailers. Besides all the reasons mentioned already by others, I just wanted something comfortable, simple and very tow-able. My wife will beed to help with the driving occasionally and she will never tow anything bigger than the TD. OK, she is not excited about this thing at all, but, When I force her to try it once I think she will change her mind about it.

My dream is to take off with my TD and see the western US for a couple months, stopping occasionally in a motel to freshen up. Later, maybe mid-winter, spend another month on the gulf coast. Then trhe next summer go up to New England, Nova Scotia, Newfi, PE Island, etc.

I took the lead acid battery out of my tear drop last winter. Have not really missed it. Am planning to make it possible to hook up my Lithium jump start battery when I feel the need. Have camped almost 2 weeks with the TD this year and have not yet felt the need. And not a one of those days was where any AC power was available. Not getting to crazy about hooking up the lithium battery.

Lots of reasons why I prefer a Teardrop over RV...Cost of Operation compared to RV (Gas, etc.). Convenience and Storage. Camping Options.

I documented my list in my blog here

There are 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't.

SC a couple of years ago when we took Compass Rose to the west coast and one of the parks we stayed in was Big Basin Redwoods State Park, my sister informed me I had camped there 60 years before. I grew up tenting and we inherited the Preway stove and Coleman lantern my parents bought in the 30's. As a married couple with not a lot of disposable income my wife and I camped a lot originally in the tent that I inherited from my parents and eventually graduating to more modern nylon tents. But still using that old Preway Stow and Coleman lantern. This was BC before kids. After the kids arrived we continued tenting and they grew up On the North Shore of Lake Superior. We were still using the Preway stove and Coleman lantern. There was an awful lot of work for Nancy in producing a meal and cleaning up afterwards. What she appreciates now most is having hot water on demand.

Having all the other things, satellite radio, TV DVD combination, insulation and heat or air conditioning are to a certain extent superfluous. But it's nice to not have to listen to your neighbor who's playing his music too loud or the dog is barking and the children screaming. We roughed it for 50+ years and were not getting any younger

Looked at lots of options. I felt cramped in the RVs I looked at.
Since vertical activity takes place outside the Teardrop - it affords lots more room for me - A 3 room RV but 2 of the rooms are outside,
I was not warm to the idea of driving my bathroom around with me. Heck in a campground someone else cleans the bathroom and I don't have to buy toilet paper etc.
I meet interesting creatures in the night on the way to the bathroom,
I can park the Teardrop in the garage and it requires minimal maintenance.

I wanted nothing to do with all the "systems" on an RV.

Of course cost of ownership was a key part of the decision.

This is my first season with the Teardrop and it really agrees with my style of camping! I am not done backpacking and kayak camping. The trailer is a great addition.

Some folks can buy anything they want.
Other folks need to build anything they want.

With careful planning, I should be able to afford to build what I'll enjoy!!
Plus I wouldn't miss out on all the planning and dreaming and hard work for anything.
When my tear is done it truly will be all mine. One of a kind. You just can't buy that.

Works for me!!

Why? I snapped this on a June trip this year. I think the photo answers the question.

Tony,

I think those types of photos are my favorite. The stark contrast of a car/truck + teardrop next to a large truck + trailer or RV is just so eye catching.
